a music rec - Under The Influence Of Giants

Posted over 5 years ago
I'm digging this band a friend told me about. I think it's groovey and catchy. at the prompting of ndintenfass, i'll tell you i think i like this song because i'm an indie pop whore and because i love the ol' school (Stevie, Bee Gees, Prince). if you like them for different reasons, i'd love to hear why.listen here:http://www.box.net/public/hi4rrvovrh

  2. ndintenfass says Given your eclectic taste, perhaps it would be worth giving a few "if you like..." comparisons?

  3. natR says i thought about that, ndintenfass. coming up with comparables is not really my specialty. The All Music Guide says they take "inspiration from big-name acts like the Beatles, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, the Bee Gees, and Prince (to spout just a few)." Pandora compares them to The Lovemakers, Kashmir, Foma, Rock Kills Kid, and As Tall As Lions (I've only heard two of those bands). People listening to UTIOG are also listening to OK Go, Snow Patrol, Every Move a Picture, The Format, Panic! At the Disco, Death Cab for Cutie, The All-American Rejects, and Imogen Heap. I'd say they fit squarely within my indie pop interests, but I do appreciate the influences of old (hence the band name?). I'm a huge fan of Stevie, the Bee Gees, and Prince. I've seen others talk about them being a genuinely new sound - who knows who will like them?

  4. ndintenfass says For my purposes it would have been enough to say "indie pop" or something like that ;)

  5. natR says fair enough. i understand not categorizing it causes difficulty for the random viewer (it could also turn them off). although, if you're one of my trusted MOGs, don't you want to hear everything i'm into? if i went to the trouble to tell you about it, it must be good. also, some will see this post because someone else told them about the band and they went to the band's MOG page to see what others were saying. so, they were already interested. i'm not a blogger, per se. i am a music sharer.

  6. ndintenfass says Um, yeah -- no. You like plenty of music I am not into (and I'm sure vice versa), so having at least some kind of signal about you're suggesting is good. I realize that genre labels can be stifling to artists, but having some notion of where your head is on a given band makes your recommendation more user friendly ;)

  7. tybees says I just did a MOG search for this band and noticed that you'd posted about them before me on the same day! I love this record. I've been listening to it on my way to and from work (I walk), and I wanna be that person in the iPod commercial who dances on the sidewalk to it. Except, I'd look like a jack-ass dancing down the street.

  8. natR says rock on tybees! i'd be that guy on the other side of the street clapping my hands (but not saying yeah) and laughing my ass off at the take-off on the iPoo commercial. i have yet to listen to the whole record, but i will...NOW!

  9. tybees says Oh man, the whole record is great. I've got it posted on multiply.com if you don't already have it. I've been rockin (disco'ing?) out to it for days now.

  10. natR says i've heard of this multiply business...it's good shit? no idea how it works. i just registered...how do i find the music?
    Permalink posted 11/13/2006
  11. tybees says It's rad. You can visit my site "here":http://tybees.multiply.com/, and add me as a contact. Then you'll be able to download any album I've posted, plus you can check out my contacts who are mostly other MOGgers. It's kind of hard to explain how the site works, but after a little exploration I think you'll figure it out.

  12. callabriel says It makes me squee a little that so many people are grooving on this record. I bought it because I was looking to fill my Duran downtime (you know, when they are recording for eons on end...?) and this band got mentioned in passing with Clear Static (who are catchy as well) and I decided to go with the underdog. Cause that's my Libra nature coming out. Fave tunes are In the Clouds and Faces. I play the shit out of both of those tunes but there is merit in other tracks on the record. I just like the really happy dancy stuff. No shame in my game. If I had an iPod I totally be the guy/gal in the video dancing like a fool in the middle of the sidewalk... and proud of it too!

  13. natR says so Libras like underdogs? (i'm not up on horoscope stuff.) so, if i like duran and UTIOG, you recommend i check out Clear Static?

  14. callabriel says Well, yeah. Especially when we feel they are being picked on to boot... if they're cute, so much the better! Umm, CS has some catchy stuff. CS was big around some of the Duran boards/forums... until they wore out their welcome by being "rock stars". You know what I mean? Personally, I like the sounds of Canadian new new wave band "Dragonette":http://dragonette.com/. They have some fun stuff. The Dragonette site is very flash heavy so if you have an old puter, like I do, you might want to see if they have carved out a niche on MySpace. (Also see my entry on the Basement Jaxx. Martina, the lead singer, lends her vocals to a track on the Jaxx most recent studio effort.) "Taxi Doll":http://www.taxidoll.com, out of California, is also a pretty fun group. They have a player up on the front page of their website that plays all the songs off their first EP plus a couple of remixes. Some nice stuff there as well. "Your Eyes Are Liars" by Sound Team on the Movie Monsters CD is a good track in the genre too. Hope you enjoy!
