I saw Terry Staunton's music-in-movies post from November 5 and was going to post two things - Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay" in the Royal Tenenbaums (which is the most perfect little 2 minutes of film I've ever seen) and this scene from Snatch. Elliott had already been mentioned a few times, but this one hadn't at all so I decided to give it its own post. It's certainly worth it.You should know a little before watching the scene if you haven't seen the movie. Basically, the two main(-ish) characters, Turkish (the narrator) and Tommy (the scared little man you see towards the end of this clip), have their lives essentially riding on Gorgeous George (the big fighter) in this boxing match. And they're sure he's going to win. Enter Brad Pitt as Mickey. The scene is partially hilarious (or at least it was for me) the first time you see it. But as soon as George gets hit and the film slows almost to a crawl your heart drops through your guts and the Stranglers' "Golden Brown" sweeps out of the darkness and you get the shot of George laid out on the ground, a powerful melancholy takes over and you get hysterical and jittery and you want to laugh but at the same time you keep thinking it had to've been a dream.
