Desert Island Discs

So I was thinking of the old scenario - Desert Island - 10 albums. Does it make sense that the albums on this list are not necessarily my 10 favourite albums? Sure it does. Here's what I would bring (in no particular order):1) Song Cycle - Van Dyke ParksObviously, because I would, in fact, DIE if I did not have it. Maybe. I could spend so much time just trying to figure out each of the instru

Remember the '80s? Synth, anyone? Perhaps a generous helping of "string arrangements" performed by a keyboard? I'm not a fan of that, myself. And apparently, even in 1989, neither is Van Dyke Parks.Have you heard his album "Tokyo Rose"? Now this probably doesn't make sense, but even though "Song Cycle" is my favourite album ever, "Tokyo Rose" is my favourite VDP album. Actually, I know that

Do you know that song "Rubber Ring" by The Smiths? It's essentially Morrissey's song to people who outgrow his music. It's brilliant, really."And when you're dancing and laughing And finally living Hear my voice in your head And think of me kindly"I used to be really into the Smiths about 5 years ago, and while I would never say I "grew" out of them, they didn't seem to be as urgent. Well, I've

The Great Gig In The Sky

I was just listening to "The Great Gig In The Sky" by Pink Floyd. I never really thought about it before, but today something just struck me. I love this song. Like, I am IN love with it. It's like an atmosphere all on its own. The piano in it is very moving, especially in the intro. It's another one of those songs that makes me want to stop being lazy and actually learn how to play piano."I a

August 12th. Can you wait? I mean, I love summer just as much as the next person, but I wish I could skip to August 12th when I will be able to run to the local record store during my lunch break at work, storm through the door, grab "Inara George - An Invitation - with Van Dyke Parks" and gush about it for 20 minutes to Tony, the very patient store owner and all-around cool guy... Like that...

Oh MOG, it's been too long.Hemingway, regarding the new Martha Wainwright album. I really, really, really like it. The problem is, I like the first two songs SO much, I don't usually make it past them. That is a problem to be sure."Bleeding All Over You" - in a way reminds me of Rufus' "Greek Song", but I'm not sure why. Persnaps it is the beat. No, actually, I just listened to "Greek Song" a

Am I the only one who is sometimes bothered when someone sings a song on another person's album? Not all the time, but sometimes I just really don't like it. For example, take "Old Whore's Diet" by Rufus Wainwright. It's a personal favourite, but when Antony sings that one verse it really gets under my skin. Nothing against Antony, I would just rather hear Rufus, you know? OR, the prime examp

Corrina, Corrina

I was listening to "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" and "Corrina, Corrina" is without a doubt my favourite track. Kind of strange, since it isn't even one of his tunes (yeah, I wrote "tune" instead of "song", you bet), but just listen to it. SO good. For real, just listen. Go ahead. Do it. I dare you. That's it.
