Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis' headstone stolen.

Former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis's headstone was stolen last night from Macclesfield Cemetery in Cheshire, England.

The stone, which bore the inscription: "Ian Curtis 18-5-80" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was stolen between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

There are no apparent leads, but officers are asking that if anyone has any information, they should contact them.

Joy Division has recently become more well-known and popular due to a biopic about Curtis, "Control", and a documentary released this year.

Curtis hung himself at the age of 23, in the kitchen of his home in May 1980.

Happily stuck in Two Hours Traffic.

Okay, can I first just say that I love 3Hive? Every time I read their blog, I come out with at least one great music discovery. 3Hive's latest find is Two Hours Traffic.

And I love them. They're enthusiastic, catchy, and the perfect song to play in your car as you're driving down the highway, windows rolled down and sunglasses on. Well, I don't drive, but if the song's great from the passenger seat, then it's even better when you're the driver! (Yes, I'm one of those passenger DJ's. Drivers beware, if you don't like having your radio hijacked).

Two Hours Traffic has just come out with their second album, Little Jabs. They're a huge hit in Canada, and have recently been nominated for the Polaris Prize (which recognizes the year's best Canadian album, and isn't dependent on sales). They have also been on Gossip Girl and The O.C. Maybe if I watched those shows then I would have been listening to this band a lot earlier...but then again, I probably would be soulless too.

So check it out, pop it into your CD player, and for once enjoy being stuck in traffic.

Katy Perry Thinks UR Gay

Who among us here on MOG haven't dated someone who's "so indie rock it's almost an art", or who you wish would hang themselves with their scarf? I mean, seriously.

I have been told that I have horrible taste in men. Now, I wouldn't exactly say that -- but when I listened to Katy Perry's song,"Ur So Gay", it definitely brought back a few memories.

So I was hooked on this song. It's like a female power anthem about the boys of today. No longer are boys scruffy -- instead, they're tastefully dirty. They wear pants almost as tight as we girls do, arguably even tighter. They read the classics and can generally just be pretentious. But do they have a dick? Who knows! Probably not after those tight pants, they don't.

And as Katy says, "That song is about a specific guy that I used to date and specific issues that he had. The song is about my ex wearing guyliner and taking emo pictures of himself in the bathroom mirror."

Check out the video and song for Katy Perry's "Ur So Gay". Maybe you'll go off and write a rant of your own. But most likely you'll end up singing along. I know I did.

The Teeth Have A Falling Out

(c) Ryan Collerd

I just found out that The Teeth have broken up. And I'm distraught. I think my reaction to the break-up is much like Daytrotter's:

No, No, No, No, No, No, No, NO! [Click to read their article.]

I was supposed to see The Teeth with Bishop Allen at the Black Cat on May 18, but I guess that's not happening now. I just wish I knew what caused this...I haven't been this involved in a break-up since the 7th grade!

All I have to say, in conclusion, is that I will miss The Teeth. I wish you had never fallen out.

Sorry, but I'll never give up on the corny puns. HOWEVER, in honor of the band, I give you their last, unreleased song. Enjoy, and always remember.

Letters From The Sky: Civil Twilight

Last night, I was lucky enough to see a great show at my school, American University. Matt Pond PA came to play for us, and they had a great opener: Civil Twilight.

Civil Twilight is composed of Andrew and Steven McKellar and Richard Wouters. They hail from Cape Town, South Africa. Now, I have to say most people came out for Matt Pond, but when Civil Twilight played, everyone was won over.

The lead singer, Steven, had an amazing voice, the drummer had a frenetic style all his own, and as for the bassist, Matt Pond PA's own Matthew Daniel Siskin had this to say as he stood in the crowd: "He's amazing on the bass! Wow."

Do they have fan appeal? You bet. After the show, they sold tons of CDS (and were even kind enough to sign them for the audience!), posters, and t-shirts. I also heard the audience murmuring about how much they reminded them of Radiohead, but in a different way -- and they loved it.

Every song was passionate and well-put together. I highly suggest you check out their album, Human out on OneOctober Recordings, and be sure to stop by their sick website (designed by the guitarist, Andrew, who also designed all the merch):

Some Pageantry I Can Enjoy: Aeroplane Pageant

Aeroplane Pageant grabs your notice with their debut album, Wave To The Moon with robust, emotional vocals along with dramatic, captivating guitar. You are immediately pulled into a dream world full of intricate, wavering melodies.

Bassist Timothy Watson's smooth bass lines help to support lead singer and guitarist Brian Kelly's impulsive, striking guitar riffs. All together, the album makes for an intensely passionate listening experience that can't be missed. Newsday has even caught on, dubbing the band's album "one of the best indie-rock albums of the year so far..."

Check out their song "All The Days", and be sure to listen to their entire album.

You'll need to play this more than Twice.

I was on Myspace the other day, and I was added by a wonderful band, Twice. Now, I'm guilty of scouring Myspace for amazing bands. This time, the band came to me.

Twice is made up of two students, 22-year-old Andréas Eriksen and 20-year-old Margot Poirier; Andréas is from Denmark, and Margot is from France. Since they don't share a native tongue, they sing in English. It's a beautiful compromise that yields an impressive result.

Their charming lyrics and catchy music will definitely make an impression. Listen to their song, "Are You", and then go check out their newest self-titled album, which is available for free download on their website:

A Regular Joe and an Eskimo Walk Into A Bar...

Well, a cold front has moved into D.C., and I thought it would be appropriate to blog about the band I can't stop listening to lately, Eskimo Joe.

Eskimo Joe hails from Australia, not a colder climate, and their album, Black Fingernails, Red Wine has been on the top of the charts in their home country, and has recently made it across the pond to much acclaim.

Speaking as a New Yorker, when I stumbled across their song "New York", I was of course highly interested. At the time I was making a playlist for my state out of homesickness.

The song is evocative, and the lead singer Temperly's husky voice immediately pulls you in when he sings,

Hey, hey, I know it wasn't New York
Where I lost my mind.
Hey, hey, I know I must have left it
It was back home all the time.

I highly recommend their newest album, and as a snapshot of their musical prowess, listen to "New York":

"People Are Talking" About Beat Radio

Beat Radio has been one of my favorite bands for awhile now. At once relaxing and radiant, their songs catch your ears and make you smile.

Their new EP, Miracle Flag has several gems on it, but the one that caught my attention was "People Are Talking." With a steady beat, earnest lyrics, and fresh sound, it stands out from among most "pop" music we hear nowadays.

If I could give you what you want
Could you fix my heart?
Could you fix my heart?
We cast away the emblems of our youth
And the morning comes
And the world is new
I'll be burning buildings until there's nothing in my way
Then I'll close my eyes and pray

Give the song a listen -- and if you like it, head on over to Beat Radio's website, where they offer up their first album for FREE.

And then tell your friends about Beat Radio, because they deserve the publicity that comes when people talk.

A Fine Frenzy Gives Chills on "One Cell In The Sea"

While walking into my dorm room today, I was shocked to hear a hauntingly beautiful voice emanating from my roommate's computer. Normally, she and I don't have the same music taste, but A Fine Frenzy gave me chills.

A Fine Frenzy is 22-year-old Alison Sudol, a gorgeous woman with an even prettier voice. But don't get me wrong -- she's not just a pretty face; and she's got the voice to prove it.

On "Almost Lover", she evokes memories of lovers who make promises, only to leave. Her lyrics are heartfelt:

I cannot go to the ocean
I cannot drive the streets at night
I cannot wake up in the morning
Without you on my mind
So you're gone and I'm haunted
And I bet you are just fine
Did I make it that easy for you
To walk right in and out of my life?

"Almost Lover" is not the only gem from her album, "One Cell In The Sea." Her more upbeat, "You Picked Me" speaks of love that hasn't gone awry:

And all I can say
Is you blow me away

I haven't found an songstress this profound in a long while. Take a listen, and then go buy the CD. You know you want to.

-Amanda
