Hearing Super Bon Bon today took me back to a flashback moment of the soundtrack that is my life. Before I moved to the 504, I got my first tattoo, a tribal design, at Crescent City Tattoos on Magazine St, in uptown New Orleans with Mike Doughty singing in the background. The tattoo artist was playing this beautifully strange music in the background. As he was inking me up, I had to ask him, "What are you playing?" He stopped looked up and answered Soul Coughing's Irresistible Bliss.
Not many know of the weirdness and wonder that is Soul Coughing. I thankfully got my first dose in New Orleans while getting my first tattoo. What a way to discover a new band. Throughout that somewhat painful and amazing experience of having art created on my arm, I felt relaxed and funkafied by this strange and addicting voice coming from the speakers. Ever since that moment I was hooked; a Soul Coughing and Doughty fan por vida.
"Move aside,
and let the man go through.
Let the man go through..."
Those lyrics by Doughty reflect how I felt that day, changed and ready to face the world. I wish I could bottle that feeling and share it with everyone that I know. To feel that kind of empowerment with an act of expression that will leave you inked for life is quite an exhilarating experience.
To this day, any Soul Coughing song from Irresistible Bliss takes me back to that moment of my first official inking on my arm. That tattoo is symbol of change for me and will always remind of that day in New Orleans. Thank you Doughty and Soul Coughing for providing me the soundtrack to a mental snapshot that I will always remember.

My Trusted MOGs
You have good taste! Soul Coughing is very interesting trip hop zaniness, but extremely accessible for most listeners. They have at least four cds and three that I can think of are regulars on my iPod rotation! I must confess that I find listening to them much easier than trying to decipher their lyrics!

if it was me, i'd have a hard time sitting still to this song while getting a tattoo! this reminds me of writing the lyrics on my desk in 7th grade :)
