I made a comment last night to the effect that Ryan Adams is the closest thing to Bob Dylan our generation will ever hear. I'm not saying that he is Dylan but his work speaks for itself like that of Great American Bard's.
"I was working at such a furious pace, very mindful of the work that I was doing, creating what I think is very solid, very ridiculously well constructed, well thought out work that is probably more literate than most people know. And referencing everything from Charles Dickens to Hemingway to Frank Stella's paintings. The subtle references are all there. And whether people that have four beers in them don't understand that, it's not my fault. I was still completely becoming culturally aware of who I was as an America artist by developing my work. And really at the time, I still feel this way, anything that was surrounding it doesn't matter not one drop to me ."
I love this quote by Ryan Adams, defending his output during his days of excess in his twenties, from the Dave Fanning interview which you can find on You Tube. It reminds me of something I saw at work yesterday. Life isn't about finding yrself it's about creating yrself. And this perfectly describes the creative output of one David Ryan Adams.
And I'm feeling So Alive, today.
