Lesson Learnt.

Hello.

If a popular, great band (i.e. Yo La Tengo) is playing at a small venue (i.e. Bimbo's 365 in SF) for a good price (i.e. $25),

1. Do email your friends...
2. Don't wait for them to respond to your email.
3. Buy tickets immediately.

Why? Because it will sell out within 3 days. Guaranteed.

Thank you.

DJ Tonk at the SF Asian Art Museum

Hello!

DJ Tonk.
Dancing.
Asian Art Museum.
Anime.
Alcohol.

Yes. Although I only partook in the first four of these items (being that i'm sick and all), the show was nonetheless awesome. When I first walked in, DJ Tonk was spinning Towa Tei's "Technova" (sampled in A Tribe Called Quest's "Find A Way"). Yeah. I was happy. DJ Tonk is up there in a sumo costume, spinning records, there's anime projected on the marble walls behind him, people are talking, drinking, dancing. Very good show. DJ Tonk puts on a good mix. I bought a record. :) Sorry! So I can't post a song here... but check the post I mention below!

Thanks to stackdj for posting about him or I would've never known!

Midnight Movies, Raveonettes

Hello!

So, I grew up in SF... wanting to go to concerts... wanting to go to 21+ concerts... EVIL Cafe du Nord would not allow it.

Now I'm back, I'm almost 24, and I finally got to go!!! Ms. Sandra of Midnight Movies threw lisbetho on the guest list!

I hadn't seen MM in about a year, that time... the guitarist was rather loud with his instrument and the lead singer seemed to have no stage presence. But THIS time... wow! They have improved so much! I'm quite impressed what so many months of touring will do for a live show. :) And I was happy because they played Strange Design this set!!! Yay!

Also stayed for The Raveonettes and got to see Miss Sandra sit in at drums for them! SWEET!

Yep. That's all for now!

Thanks.

GREAT Northern

Hello!

Great Northern at The Independent in SF with lisbetho and Mindy. It was a GREAT show. Loud, compelling, beautiful music. And who can beat a super cute girl bassist in a hot white dress?! :) They're based in LA and mentioned that SF was better than LA, which just made me fall in love with them a little more. Their CD and recordings do not do their live show justice, although The Middle comes very close. Check it out below! Or see 'em at this website or their myspace to hear some samples!

Yeah Yeah YEAH!!!

Hello!!!

Two FREE concerts in Brooklyn, 100 wristbands each, one at 7pm (boys and girls) one at 10pm (all girls!). I got into both!!! Instead of studying for my finals!!! (Special thanks to stackdj for giving me the scoop then convincing me to go)

They were filming for a dvd and new music video (for "Down Boy"). They had us all wear black eye masks (like raccoons) and filmed in night vision.

Obviously, they played Down Boy, but they also played Art Star, Black Tongue, Y Control, Rich, Date With the Night, Our Time, Maps, Modern Romance, Cheated Hearts, Phenomena, Pin, etc. etc. etc...

Highlights include: Brian (drummer) posing for a photo for me and holding my hand as he walked out after the first set, and Karen O walking specifically up to me for a song ("Date With the Night") request at the end of the first set (AND playing it!).

At the end of the 2nd set, Karen sang "Maps" and walked with all of us girls outside. She and all of the girls continued singing and she kept smiling and giggling.

Such an amazing and intimate show. Check it.

Thank you!

Paris, Je T'aime

Hello!

Paris, Je T'aime. I do. But, this is also the title of a movie that will be released in the US soon (May 4 in NYC and May 18 in LA, with more cities to come). The (US) trailer is so moving to me, which is helped along by the song in the background.

I found out that the song is by Feist! She is invading my life with music EVERYWHERE. On TV, on the internet, in the theater, EVERYWHERE. What a sneaky bitch. I love her for it though.

Anyway, she created two versions of the song, La Meme Histoire and We're All in the Dance. I'll post one here for you all.

Thank you.

Dear Ex Boyfriend,

To the one who can't stop trying to hurt me. You've brought nothing but pain. This song's for you.

Let it die and get out of my mind
We don't see eye to eye
Or hear ear to ear

Don't you wish that we could forget that kiss ?
And see this for what it is
That we're not in love

The saddest part of a broken heart
Isn't the ending so much as the start

It was hard to tell just how I felt
To not recognize myself
I started to fade away

And after all it won't take long to fall in love
Now I know what I don't want
I learned that with you

The saddest part of a broken heart
Isn't the ending so much as the start
The tragedy starts from the very first spark
Losing your mind for the sake of your heart
The saddest part of a broken heart
Isn't the ending so much as the start

Fixed

Hello!

Every so often I hear a new song with which I immediately feel an emotional attachment. I become totally fixed on that one song. It becomes lodged in my brain for days, weeks even, and I can't help but listen to it every chance I get.

This time it is "Lazy Eye" by Silversun Pickups.

There is something about the throaty feminine vocals, that almost shoegaze like buzzing background, and that one 4-note guitar riff... that reminds me of long night drives on pitch black freeways in high school or a longing I felt in my late teen and (very) early twenties years... almost screaming the way the singer screams his lyrics.

Sigh...

Last month it was "Postcards from Italy" by Beirut, which reminded me of the cold here on the east coast with my love or taking motorcycle rides with him in Los Angeles...

Music moves me ... often when I least expect it.

Thank you.

Hello,

Out of boredom and after receiving my tax returns, I spluged on the following:

Viva! La Woman by Cibo Matto

We're Already There by Mazarin

and

Things We Lost in the Fire by Low

Still waiting on them. Move faster, Amazon!
In the meantime, I DLed...

Let it Die by Feist

and

Bee Hives by Broken Social Scene.

Trying to keep up with my interest in music... some times it fades away then comes crashing back to the point of needed 5 albums at once.

Thanks.

Indian Music

Hello!

I just saw The Namesake today. And I've known it for a while, but I really like Indian music. Not so much of the super upbeat Bollywood type... but I THINK the more classic sound of Indian music.

I have NO idea where to start looking though. Any suggestions from anyone?

Also, I very very very much enjoy the sound of the tabla. Especially that sort of low sound it can make when rubbed along the top with the heel of your hand.

Anyway. Hope someone can help! :D

Hello!

I accidentally saw the credits to Stranger Than Fiction before watching the movie and saw "Music by: Britt Daniels and Brian Reitzell" flash across the screen.

I decided to buy the soundtrack immediately. Before I'd even seen the movie.

Seems reasonable right?

(You may know Britt Daniels as the lead singer/guitarist from Spoon and Brian Reitzell as the music producer of such films as Lost in Translation and Thumbsucker. wow. wow. wow.)

Moral of the Story

Hello!

Remember back when rap songs had morals?

Yeah. I do.

"Here we go
Once upon a time not long ago
when people wore pajamas and lived life slow
When laws were stern and justice stood
and people were behavin' like they ought ta good
There lived a lil' boy who was misled
by anotha lil' boy and this is what he said:
'Me, Ya, Ty, we gonna make sum cash
robbin' old folks and makin' tha dash'
They did the job, money came with ease
but one couldn't stop, it's like he had a disease
He robbed another and another and a sista and her brotha
tried to rob a man who was a D.T. undercover
The cop grabbed his arm, he started acting erratic
he said "Keep still, boy, no need for static'
Punched him in his belly and he gave him a slap
but little did he know the lil' boy was strapped
The kid pulled out a gun, he said 'Why did ya hit me?'
the barrel was set straight for the cop's kidney
The cop got scared, the kid, he starts to figure
'I'll do years if I pull this trigga'
So he cold dashed and ran around the block
cop radioes it to another lady cop
He ran by a tree, there he saw this sista
a shot for the head, he shot back but he missed her
Looked around good and from expectations
so he decided he'd head for the subway stations
But she was coming and he made a left
he was runnin' top speed till he was outta breath
Knocked an old man down and swore he killed him
then he made his move to an abandoned building
Ran up the stairs up to the top floor
opened up the door there, guess who he saw?
Dave the dope fiend shootin' dope
who don't know the meaning of water nor soap
He said 'I need bullets, hurry up, run!'
the dope fiend brought back a spanking shotgun
He went outside but there was cops all over
then he dipped into a car, a stolen Nova
Raced up the block doing 83
crashed into a tree near university
Escaped alive though the car was battered
rat-a-tat-tatted and all the cops scattered
Ran out of bullets and still had static
grabbed a pregnant lady and out the automatic,
Pointed at her head and he said the gun was full o' lead
he told the cops 'Back off or honey here's dead'
Deep in his heart he knew he was wrong
so he let the lady go and he starts to run on
Sirens sounded, he seemed astounded
before long the lil' boy got surrounded
He dropped the gun, so went the glory
and this is the way I must end this story
He was only seventeen, in a madman's dream
the cops shot the kid, I still hear him scream
This ain't funny so don't ya dare laugh
just another case 'bout the wrong path
Straight 'n narrow or yo' soul gets cast"

Oh, Slick Rick. You go.

Thanks.

Hello!

So, I downloaded Baduizm about a month or so ago, and just started listening to it. Then "Next Lifetime" came on. And WOW! I totally remember that song from middle school!

Flashback time!

Do ya'll remember "back in the day" when you'd be listening to the radio, and THAT SONG would come on. That one, they never say who the artist or what the song title is, but it's THAT SONG! So you run over to your stereo, and the tape deck on the left already has a blank tape in it, and you press hard on the mechanical "play" and "record" buttons.

Whew! You still don't know the name of THAT SONG nor do you know the artist. But FINALLY! you own your own little copy.

Or do you remember back when you'd buy up singles for $1.99 back when you couldn't afford to buy an entire album?

Yeah. Those were the days... when you first started to become obsessed with music. Remember?

Thank you.

Discovery in Skateboarding Vids

Hello!

I was just thinking about what a great resource for new (and awesome) music skateboarding videos can be. They tend to use songs that are unique... you know, stuff that isn't played on the radio (at least at the time the video comes out).

Songs I've discovered from skate videos:

"Age of Consent" by New Order
"Y Control" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Deceptacon" by Le Tigre
"I Wanna Be Your Dog" by The Stooges

Among many others... mind you, these discoveries were all made way back when. I mean, c'mon, they've got Elvis Costello, Public Enemy, the Velvet Underground, the Smiths, Notorious B.I.G., David Bowie, Del the Funky Homosapien, etc. etc. etc. Skaters got taste!

Anyone else w/ skate vid discoveries?

Also, check it: Skateboarding Music

Thanks!

Hello!

The Rentals' "Please Let That Be You" sure means a lot more when your significant other is on the other side of the country. I find myself whispering it whenever I think someone might be in my empty apartment or getting ready to knock on my door.

I miss him.

...you are my fate and i love you...

J-Pop Dance Routine

Hello!

OMG.

This has got to be the most amazingly cute, addictive song and dance routine ever.

Apparently these two ladies, HALCALI are a popular "rap" group in Japan. They're all poppy electronic hip hoppity fun.

Please, please, please watch this. I promise, after, your life will be complete.

more!
more!!
more!!!

Also, give it a listen. (I switched my importing format YAY!) Argh. Mog is acting up. I'll have to upload the song later.

One headliner.

Two openers.

The venue.

ARGH. iTunes has a default. It makes me mad. All of the CD's I've ever imported to iTunes have been imported as .AAC!!! ... I'm somehow supposed to know to switch the default to import as mp3 ...

Anyway, this means I can't upload musics to MOG.

Hello!

Wee! Hehe. I'm just attempting commentary about how it costs an arm and a leg to acquire a CD of music I love.

Thanks for forcing me to see the positive in my purchase, ScottyB. I guess I can even look at it as if I've contributed to saving the rainforest because I bought the CD at Amoeba in SF.

Also, Monsieur Wozniak, neither of those are the CD I purchased. I saw both of those used at Amoeba, but I really wanted the Carnegie Hall one hehe. So I don't hate you! Promise!

More Music! Illegal Downloading? Is this OK?

Hello!

I was out with lisbetho and spencer owen's maracatu atomico at Amoeba Records in SF today. stackdj was in the car.

lisbetho and I stood at the listening stations and she was listening to Slum Village that auto put on a mix he gave her. I decided to try on Regina Spektor. Hmm, I thought... nothing special, just like every other pseudo-pop female vocalist... just that the background beats and sounds were a little weirder (in a good way). So I said aloud to myself or lisbetho or the weird guy rapping to himself next to me, "I don't like this."

OOO but then I spotted "Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall" and started listening to that. OMG sooooooooooo good. I love these two artists SOOO much, and I was swooning when I listened to just a little bit of this album. But it was $16.98 and there weren't any used copies, so I decided to DL it. Is that bad? My justification for downloading was that both these artists are deceased, so my contribution to their music doesn't even go to them anyway! Is that a good reason? I think so. It works for me, so here I go to DL. :)

ALSO, I heard some cool music over the intercom, so I asked one of the checkers who it was, and she said it was Adult, so I gotta go DL me some o' dat too. Kinda like Prototypes in terms of vocals, and weird hip hop/electoclash like beats in the background.

All in all, a good day at Amoeba with some of my favorite people!

Thank you!

The Decemberists and TV on the Radio

Hello!

Am I the only one who hates The Decembrists and TV on the Radio out there? And when I say I hate them, I really mean that I hate their music... Although I've seen Colin Meloy live... and I think I can safely say I might hate him himself too. His performance made me want to tear my bloody eardrums out while everyone else in the audience (mostly indie college sappy emo trendy kids) sat their in quiet and awe as if plopped in front of a musical god. And TV on the Radio, well I've been subject to an ex boyfriend shoving Staring At the Sun down my throat, and... I never took to it... and never wanted to hear them (or him rave about them) again.

I don't know. Everyone seems to be loving them and they keep popping up on Top 10 lists on npr.org... that makes me feel like something's wrong with me. But I can't help the hatred! I can't!

Someone suggest me a song or two that might change my mind. I'll ... acquire ... these songs and let you know if you've somehow changed my mind about these groups... BLECH, is all I have to say for now. Or tell me if you think they might be overrated, underrated, or just right.

Thanks.

Heterosexual, Bisexual, Gay, Other, or Undeclared?

Hello!

Which one are you? I think I'm "undeclared". I don't know, check my profile.

Single, Dating, Married, or Undeclared?

Ok ok, so I just posted this to find out what "other" might be and why there isn't an "other" option in gender or marital status.

I also noticed... you can't change you gender once you've chosen one. What if I decided to change gender?

stackdj and I were wondering when these "Browse Mogs" criteria came about...

Do the shuffle.

Hello!

Ooo Ahh... what's there not to love about upbeat french bands with girlies in them??? Nothing!

That's why I was happy to find out that the band behind the song in the ad for the new ipod shuffle is Prototypes.

Hip frenchies, similar sound to CSS... most lyrics sung in french with slighty harsh almost speaking tones. Happy happy poppy musics, weird spacey noises thrown alongside guitar riffs unspeakable unforgettable. They are infectious and make you want to get up and squirm like you have e. coli or are some nerdy indie kid.

I immediately bought their new self-titled release on Amazon.com . The new release from Minty Fresh consists of songs from Prototypes' two french CDs, "Tout Le Monde Cherche Quelque Chose" and "Mutants Mediatiques".

Find their _{color:red}free downloadable EP_, "Je Ne Te Connais Pas" here.

or click on Minty Fresh above!

Have I sold you yet?

Thank you.

People need to get BETTER HEADphones. WHY? Because I'm tired of hearing fuzzy snippets of The Mars Volta, Marc Anthony, and Jay-Z through your crappy headphones when you sit next to me on the metro.

Ladytron at UCLA

Hello!

By request of freeamanda, a little bit about the Ladytron show.

Some numbers:
5 people on stage, about 150 - 200 people in the crowd, 2 sound engineers, 4 reunions with friends who had been abroad, and 1 near run in with an exboyfriend.

First I have to say that this show was outdoors. Can you imagine? Usually the sound is bouncing off the walls at the club you're in, but outdoors the sounds sorta just disappears into the crowd, but Ladytron was still amazing.

People were dancing, just loving the show, and a lot of passers-by stopped to catch a song or two.

The songs that stood out the most for me were Seventeen, Playgirl (because it's on the CD I bought at the end of the show), and a song sung not by the lead singer in a different language. The electronic beats and melodies stood out amazingly well against the lyrics and just made you want to move and have the attitude Ladytron had on stage. I loved them.

The CD was much more subdued than the performance. The live performance boasted hard beats, distinct vocals, and such catchy melody. The CD seems to take away from their show, it's weird!

Anyway, I'll stop here because I pride myself in trying to write readably short mog posts. YEAH.

Thank you.

Hello!

I saw Ladytron live! for free! at UCLA. A short trip to Los Angeles has got to have some planned events set up especially when you have no transportation other than that of the public kind.

So I set off to see Ladytron. WOW! They are so amazing live, I was almost shocked at how the CD I bought (604) just couldn't compare.

Isn't it weird when bands are better live than recorded? I think so.

Thank you.

Sweet Sounds

Hello!

I'm swept away by the sweet sounds of Mr. Shugo Tokumaru . He combines strange background sounds, ambient noises, random instruments (ukulele, etc.) and his own sweet sweet voice to produce eclectic, cute, quirky, interesting music.

I love his music. It makes me feel like the lost 20-something that I am and it makes me love that. I don't feel so bad taking the train into NY when I have such beautiful music to help me cut off the world.

Click on his name above then link to his myspace. Give it a listen.

Thank you.

I'll Do 4 U... (a love song, hip hop stylez)

Hello!

A love rap song... one that mentions more than a woman just being a hot sex object? What? When's the last time you heard one of those songs? And who makes such songs???

Father MC! (Yeah, I'm sure the guy probably loves sex, mentions it in more than one song, and his photos are pretty funny, but you know... if you make such female respecting songs... it's totally excusable and acceptable.)

How I do love and miss songs that do not objectify women, especially in the rap or even hip hop scene. Got any suggestions?

Presented for your reading pleasure, the lyrics to a wonderful song:

Sweetheart
I'm Talkin to you and no-one else
I just want you to know
That I'll Do For You

Chorus: (Singers)
If You Do For Me
I will Do For You

[Father MC]
Well excuse me let me let you know the time
On how i feel and whats on my mind
Its you that I want to be in my life
And if its possible you will be my wife
I lead you in the right direction, of course
Never play you out, so theres no laws
I'll be your love daddy just wait and see
That me and you, we were ment to be

[Father MC]
I wanna treat ya like a queen
Cook and clean
Get yo bubble bath ready so I can rub you where not seen
And watch how gentle I'll be when I rub your back
And after that theres aradiant coniac
A little romance for the quiet storm
And ah lotta lovin for the whole night long
I'm gonna caress ya body and give you a kiss
And ah rub you down where you been missed
Nibble and your navel and kiss your thigh
Play with your hair cause I'm on a love high
Well I don't know its the way that I am
Introduce me to yo mother and I'll say hello ma'am
Well I don't know its the way I was brought up
Respect my female and never get caught up
In another affair and I believe the same
If you try to be slick then the doors will open

[Father MC] {Interlude}
Yeah you know sweetheart
I told you once
And i feel i don't have to tell you anymore
It's you that i want, and it's you
That i'll do for

[Father MC]
Since we both know what we want lets get it together
And fly like two birds up a feather
Cause I'm ah protect me and look out for my
Feelings and thats why I always try
To be loyal and gentle and lay and lent
Observe the female in case I must leave camp
And if I have to break out you don't deserve
To live a good life and love a black hummin bird
It may be sexy but it is true
If you try adore then I'll adore you
And if you treat me then
I'll treat you wit opens arms and a rose just to greet you
Love you dearly respect and care for
You my dear so how could you ignore
The way I feel is real from the start
So I stop playin games and mastered the art

Please give it a listen if you can get your hands on it!

Thank you.

Hey Cool!

Hello!

My mog meter is blank now! AWESOME! :) So my status is blank. Heehee. I like that.

Anyway, in music related news... someone (hint hint, he's on Mog) bought me a nintendo ds lite! What does this have to do with music? Well... there is this game called Electoplankton and it's soooo cool! Pretty much, there are these fantastical looking little plankton like creatures with which you can create music. What I really love about this game though is the fact that you don't have to have any strict musical background to play with it and create some amazing sounding stuff.

Video game music and video games that involve music are cool. Well, some of them are... (Parappa the Rappa?) and some of them aren't... (?) ... but Electroplankton is definitely worth a look/hear. And the cool thing is, some of the "plankton" respond to your voice or clapping and record whatever sounds you make! ooo! I love it!

Thank you.

To mog or to blog, that is the question.

Hello!

It is the terrible mood I'm in that is driving me to ask this question. And the fact that I am often a snobby condescending (and sometimes hypocritical) bitch when people post a lot of stuff about their personal lives or celebrity gossip, etc. (sorry!)

*How much blog do you take with your mog?

I don't know.

But me, I try to aim for at least 90% mog (is it working?)... and by posting this I'm contributing to the other 10%... DAMNIT!

Thank you.

P.S. I gotta say though... I do LOVE food-blogs. yummm

Tonight You Belong to Me

Hello!

Have you heard, "Tonight You Belong to Me"? I have! I first heard it through lisbetho's mog here .

It's such a sweet, cute song... and let me tell you, I'm all about sweet cute songs... but what's funny about this particular one is that many people have remade this song. I found out that it was originally written to be performed by the sisters Patience and Prudence. And ... I also "found" two other versions of the song in addition to the Patience and Prudence one.

One by Josh Ritter, who I read on allmusic.com actually gave up his pursuit of a degree in neuroscience to pursue music... how cool is that???

And the other version I found was by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters from the movie The Jerk! Well the thing about THAT version is that stackdj had heard it before and it was the first version he'd heard.

He said of all the ones I played for him he liked the Steve Martin version the best and I said I liked the Fiona Apple/Jon Brion version the best (even though I hate Fiona Apple)... and then I decided that it must just be that the first version of a song that someone hears is the always their favorite version...

What do you guys think? Your favoite version/remix/remake of a song is practically ALWAYS the FIRST one you hear?

It seems to be true in my experience.

Thank you.

The Science of Sleep

Hello!

...if you rescue me, i'll be your friend forever, let me in your bed, i'll keep you warm in winter...

How incredibly cute are those lyrics? And how much cuter is it when performed on screen by random French and Spanish actors and actresses dressed in cat costumes? (BTW, the actors and actresses actually sing the song... and although Serge Gainsbourg's daughter is in the movie, she does not sing only acts!) You don't know, you say? Well, go see The Science of Sleep and find out!

Anyway, the soundtrack is composed? written? by M. Jean-Michel Bernard, and it's quite lovely. Only so many people in this world seem to have a knack for movie soundtracks... and he's one of them. One of the best parts of the movie is only discovered after you've seen the movie and find out that the piano playing police officer is actually Bernard himself!

So this post has something to do with music and movies... sorry. Haha. Trying to stick to music, but... well this is the last CD I ran to the store to get.

Hello!

Let me TELL you. It's hard to live with a music producer and try and do your Thermodynamics/Energy Sources and Conversion homework in the same room. Especially when he's trying to get the timing right on a mix of Jay Z and 99 Red Balloons.

But then he starts making cute music with vibes and flutes sounds and beats and then you want to STOP doing your homework altogether and just listen...

or waste your time poking around mog... (in other words, be totally unproductive and relaxed)

Oh, internal conflicts.

Thank you.

Hello!

What's up? Guess what? I got an apartment. It's in Jersey. That means 1.5 hour commute to school 3 days a week... and no time to find new musics... therefore, no time to post about new musics.

But... speaking of new musics, how about a little clue into old musics?

stackdj and i had been enjoying the new OK Go music video for "Here It Goes Again." And then we went onto youtube.com to see the video they included on their self titled album, you know, the one about table tennis.

Well, I've seen 'em live, I've seen 'em on TV, and I've seen 'em on their cute little table tennis video. And I like 'em. Every way. A lot. Yeah.

Thank you.

Mr. Biggs

Hello,

When you got no place to live, you don't really got time to listen to music...and internet access sparce in the big apple. Therefore, you end up at some bar that offers free wifi called Mr. Biggs where they play shitty music. So songs like "Dance, Dance" by Fall Out Boy and that song that's on the radio and "M"TV by Gnarls Barkley get stuck in your head for hours and hours and hours and hours as you're trying to peacefully walk down the street or ride the subway in NYC. Fuck! I HATE those songs!!!

I need somewhere to live so I can blast my own music once again...

Thank You.

Thangs and Stuff and Stuff and Thangs and... Stuff...

Hello!

Yao! One Word Extinguisher is a fun compliation of weird plinking sounds, vocal samples, and a general randomness of noise.

I first found out about him after talking to people about RJD2. They said, if you like RJD2, you'll like Prefuse 73. And I do!

Well RJD2, I'd say samples much more from hip hop and collaborates with such artists. His sound is altogether different from the Prefuse 73, who seems to use much more of his own music in his mixes.

It also appears from photos I've been finding online that he performs with live musicians also. (I've never seen him live) COOL!

I love them both for different reasons, but give Prefuse 73 a listen. I promise you won't regret it.

Thank You.

Music Quote Captions

Hello!

Music quote captions for photos, yay or nay?

"I get high with a little help from my friends..."

Sometimes you get a reallllly good one, and it can be rather clever and everyone can relate because they all know that song... but sometimes it really sucks for that ONE person who doesn't know the song... I know what THAT feels like... it's poop. So I think music quotes (AND movie quotes) should be used with caution and prudence and awareness of the audience around you.

Thank You.

MOG PARTEEEE

Hello!

So this is what it's like to meet people you only know through photos and words online for the first time in person. It's WEIIIIIIRD! Because the people tend to be sorta what you thought they'd be like.

Anyway, everyone was totally cool. Especially the people who work for mog a log. They were cool.

The food was good... the drinks were good... the FIRST DJ was good... the 2nd DJ was not so good... luckily, we

(my crew and i, which consisted of stackdj, spencer owen, lisbetho, mindy, and i)
left to go to a cafe just as he started.

The mural on the wall is amazing. And so is the visual mog-o-sphere. WOW.

So stackdj, lisbetho, and myself spent time burning and decorating CDs of stackdj's music to give out to people at the party (shameless self promotion). Here're photos of lisbetho's and my work:

Overall, a rockin' good time! as lisbetho would say, WOOT. or as stackdj would say, MOO.

Thank you, MOG.

Corinne Bailey Rae, Meh.

Hello!

Ok... so I hear/see "Put Your Records On" on VH1... and then I see the album for sale at Starbucks...

So why couldn't I figure out that this cd would most likely be BAAAAAAAD?

Well, for starters, "Put Your Records On" is a great song, I like it. I like the lyrics, which are mildly inspirational for little girls with a tinge of afrocentricity... I like her voice, a pretty good range, sweet, strong, unique... I like the music, the little acoustic guitar parts, the beat, etc.

Guess what? That is the ONLY song that reflects the above good qualities. And what else do I find out? Well, Rae didn't even write that song BY HERSELF, she had help! And she did with the ENTIRE album, sans ONE song, one song that I don't even enjoy... On just about every song other than "P.Y.R.O." she sings about love and relationships and just has this outdated overused 1990's soul (or what radio stations would call r&b) feel.

Isn't that SAD??? I'm SO SAD now. I really thought I might've found a jewel. Well, I did, but it's not Corinne Bailey Rae, it's "Put Your Records On."

Hmm... maybe it's time to go get some Amoeba credit back on my purchase now that I've ripped the CD to iTunes.

Thank You.

Hello!

Greetings from Michigan, The Great Lake State (Sufjan Stevens)
Corinne Bailey Rae (Self titled)
The Swimming Hour (Andrew Bird)

All of the above now added to my collection...
Will they cure my musical boredom?

I think so.

Musical Boredom Solution

Hello!

I think I just need to go spend the $8.45 I have in Amoeba Records credit and buy a Sufjan Stevens CD or pick up the new Corinne Bailey Rae CD.

I'm ashamed to say it, but I found out about Corinne Bailey Rae from VH1, but I swear!!! it was at 4am and I was watching music videos. Ask stackdj!

That was when he came to the conclusion that we are old based on the fact that we like what's on VH1 BETTER than what's on MTV... which is not to say that we necessarily LIKE what's on VH1... but yah know... Corinne Bailey Rae don't sound so bad to me.

Or maybe I should just start pulling some of stackdj's records out of his box... muahahahahaaaa!

Thank you.

HELLO!

WAOOOOOOHHHWOOO!!!

Talk about a wild ride!!! stackdj and I went to see CSS. Wow. Wowwww...

The concert was amaaaaaaazing! CSS is GREAT recorded and even BETTER live!!! stackdj and I both agreed that even though the sound guys at the venue SUCKED one could still tell that CSS are incredible performers. I love them all x 1,000,000.

Being right in front sure helped a lot too! stackdj got the brunt of the mosh pit though. Everyone was going nuts!!!

HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENING pour moi:
Lovefoxxx wore my helmet!!! She said, "I like your helmet!" once I put it on and as soon as I took it off, she grabbed it from me. HEE HEE! I was so into it, I can't even remember what song it was when she was wearing the helmet.

I think that the photos speak for themselves (all photos taken with a phone and for some reason my computer won't rotate the photos when I post them! whyyyy!!!):

Take advantage or seize the day or something like that.

Hello!

This post is inspired by LisbethO and our friend Tom and my friend Sandra and probably Spencer and a few other people who've been lucky enough to experience what I and LisbethO have not.

Did ya'll know that Jon Brion used to play the Largo EVERY friday night, and not just ONCE every friday night, TWICE? And one show, the midnight show was FREE and he'd play just about anything you REQUESTED?

Well, once I went at midnight with LisbethO and our friend Charlotte to meet up with my friend Sandra who'd already seen Monsieur Brion on a few occasions (and was supposed to book a night for a group of us to go, but never did). Well, it just so happened that the electricity decided to go out that night. DAMNIT!

Unfortunately, I wasn't motivated enough to call Largo RIGHT after that happened to make reservations for another time... well, when I finally go around to it, Jon Brion was nursing his arm and had stopped playing at Largo. DAMNIT!

Anyway, I was wondering who of all you moggers has been opportunistic enough to have seen Jon Brion at Largo and what it was like... (then I can secretly loathe and envy you).

Thank you.

So... my favorite thing about Django is the fact that he lost parts his fingers on his fretting hand in a fire... and then relearned to play the guitar with this disability... is that CRAZY or what?! (see photo)

Whatever Happened to Black Eyed Peas?

Hello!

Road trip music turns to music conversation turns to MOG post. After listening to a few songs from Behind the Front in the car, I discuss with a certain DJ(producer) what happened to Black Eyed Peas...

BEFORE:

He says, "It's one thing to sell out, but it's another to have a whole album talking shit about selling out and THEN to sell out the very next album... I love the line 'wacker than those niggas that be rhymin' on the Pringles commercial'... and then what do I hear one day on a Pringles commercial (so many years later), but Black Eyed Peas rhymin' on a Pringles commercial."

WOW. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED??? When did Fergie suddenly become front(wo)man of Black Eyed Peas? And what the hell are her "humps"? And why are people dancing to that song on their phones in dressing rooms?

AFTER:

Un Classic

Hello!

Ratatat, crazy electronic music, insane distortion on guitar and bass, will be releasing? (August 22?) Classics, their second CD.

While their first CD had only one danceable hard beat song, Classics is a bit of a change. Some of their music sounds harder on the second CD, akin to Seventeen Years on their self-titled debut. Typically when I play Ratatat (the CD) for my friends, they love Seventeen Years to death, to the point where that is the only song they play on the CD. So I'm guessing that was the direction Ratatat (the band) wanted to explore a bit more on Classics.

Another big difference is their instrumentation. Listen closely and you'll hear a number of different sounds from Ratatat (the CD).

Anyway, it's Ratatat with a new flair, something different, which is great since I think it's sweet when artists decide to progress in their musical creation and performance.

Thank you.

Motorcycle Music... but... you can't listen to music on a motorcycle...

Hello!

It's really interesting... the difference between riding on a motorcycle and driving a car. One of the really big differences I noticed yesterday after driving... (which hasn't happened in a long while)... was that there's MUSIC in my car! Whoa!!! What a big difference that makes while driving a car... it really keeps you calm and focused and happy (most of the time... in LA it's really hard to be these things while driving)... *also, see lemontwist's post on music after/during an interview.

but THEN... if you're on a motorcycle, there's so much more to take in (especially if you're not in the driver's seat) and you are totally absorbed in such things as temperature, bumps in the road, and whomever might be sitting in front or back of you. Pretty much... you don't NEED music on a motorcycle the way you might in a car.

WEIRD HUH?

Thank you.

DELETED!

Hello!

You know when your playlist starts filling up with all the crap you used to listen to in high school (or college for those of you who've been out for more than a year and a month)? And every time one of those songs come on, you immediately hit the Skip button?

It's about time to go through that shit and start deleting.

Here's a few artists (I won't go into songs because that'll just take too long) I don't feel sad about parting with:

U2
Third Eye Blind
Sublime
Better Than Ezra
Collective Soul
Something Corporate
The Starting Line
The Wallflowers
311
Tonic
Silverchair

Granted, I didn't delete ALL of the songs I have by ALL of these artists... you know how nostalgia can sometimes poke you with its index finger in your side to say, "you know, you really ought to keep that... remember the good old days?"

"But nostalgia, it's time to let go!"

Thank you.

Midnight Moviesssss

Hello!

I’m back from the show! (see below)

I’ll start by saying that the girls in this band are the powerhouses behind the music. Their live show was awesome, with the girls switching up instruments, between keyboards, drums, vocals, flute, tamborine, and bass. WOW ! I LOVE bands that do that… (see broken social scene). Round sounding girl vocals yummy, super hard drum beats played by my girl Sandra, also yummy. Check ‘em out… specifically check out “Strange Design,” I love that song…

But there is a negative side to this post, which btw, is CORRECTABLE … the guitarist apparently wanted to be the star of the show and had his amps turned up WAY too loud… to the point of not being able to hear any other instruments… WHAAA ??? Yeah, uhm… simmer down guy, our ears are about to fall off.

All in all, it was a good set… I’m glad I went and I remember why I’m in love with (asian!) chick drummers now.

http://www.midnightmovies.net/

Bands I Miss

Hello!

Why do such things happen as bands breaking up? I miss you, The Anniversary, very much... I know a few of you started a side project, but it was never the same. And you also, Beulah, and you also, Moth.

I have had the fortunate luck of seeing all three of these bands in concert though. Amazing, beautiful, fun, lovely. Boy, I sure liked them a lot.

The Anniversary, you made me believe in music and uniqueness among hundreds of thousands of indie bands.

Beulah, you made me feel like I was at the beach, serenaded by Beach Boys like music and trumpet backgrounds.

And Moth, you were my savior amongst the throngs of 15 year olds rooting and hooting for such bands as Finch, Allister and RX Bandits. Your style and grace and poppy crazy fun will never be forgotten.

Thank you.

Hello!

You know those golden oldies stations?

Do you suppose they'll be playing the same "golden oldies" in 50 years?

I can't decide...

And is there any music nowadays one could consider truly historically important and groundbreaking to the point that we'll have NEW "oldies" stations?

Hmm...

Soundtracks

Hello!

Since I'm on the subject of soundtracks... isn't it amazing how much a soundtrack can lead your emotions?

One of the things a ex boyfriend pointed out to me many years ago after we saw In the Bedroom was that that movie had no music throughout. During the most emotional times of the movie, there was no music to guide us in our feelings. Interesting yes?

I think it's impressive that this movie could be so good without the worries of a score or soundtrack. It is definitely an emotional movie even in its silence.

But really, sometimes a soundtrack can pump up a movie and make it even more incredible than it already is...

Soundtracks I love include... Lost in Translation, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, Motorcycle Diaries, and Dogtown and Z Boys... among many, many others that I can't think of at the moment.

Thank you.

Hello!

Just got back from spending two days in Mexico. Lots of alcohol, good comida, and good company. On the way there and the way back, my friend Juan and I listened to the Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack. Sooo good a soundtrack... especially for road trips. While listening to this soundtrack, you can pretend you're on a motorcycle travelling all over South America, when really you're just driving a car a few blocks (walking distance) down to the grocery store (these are the things we do in LA). It's an amazingly moving soundtrack.

Thank you.

Continuing Moodiness

Hello.

What is it with Tilly and the Wall that gets those 15 out of 500 all excited and dancing the crowd? Personally, I wished that I had my gun the night I saw them open for Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins... and not to shoot myself... to shoot the tap dancer. Something about their cheeriness while yelling "fuck you!" and flipping the bird really got to me. Aren't you supposed to be angry when you do that? Ok, ok, so they're happy and poppy, I'll even maybe give you catchy... (though I sure didn't get any of their songs stuck in my head thankfully)... but really, a band that needs a gimmick usually... (i.e. tap dancing and wooden boxes for their scantily and weirdly clad girls)... you know... sucks.

No thank you.

Hello! So... I used to say that I didn't like female vocalists. As of late, I've proved myself wrong. I have this new strange obsession with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Metric and and Le Tigre and Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins and The Rentals among others. And while their music doesn't have all that much in common, all these bands have female vocalists. And that's when I discovered why I was digging Giant Drag so much! They're busting up on the music scene which is totally awesome. And all good girls - not good girls, but responsible females who are proud of their gender - should check out this band and support Annie, YEAH! Her sweet little voice and guitar riffs are just such a contrast to her cutting lyrics, it makes for a great combination. Also, to plug Micah, it's most definitely worth seeing Giant Drag live to hear him on the drums. Wow. Thank you.

FIRST person to MOG about My Bloody Valentine???

Hello! How could I resist?! Anyway, I love them. They embody the word "shoegaze" for me. First discovered upon suggestion by my friend Sandra (drummer of Midnight Movies and girlfriend of Micah, drummer and keyboardist of Giant Drag) and a listen to "Sometimes" on the Lost In Translation soundtrack. I love them. They are beautiful, haunting music. Thank you.

thE Rentals

Hello! They and their music are quite cute. Upon a second chance finding of a burnt copy of their CD (given to me by a previous crush along with Seven More Minutes and Mogwai's Happy Songs for Happy People) I gave it another listen. Please give "Friends with P" a listen or perhaps my favorite, "Please Let That Be You" and you shall see and hear what I mean. Thank you.
