Tommy Dorsey Plays “Sentimental Journey”

Posted about 1 year ago

Contrasting performances of a well known song can be a rewarding intellectual experience. Thus it is with Tommy Dorsey's version of "Sentimental Journey," written in 1945 by Bud Green, Les Brown and Ben Homer. The arrangement begins with a downwardly spiraling arpeggio, then settles into a firmly swinging, lower range reeds with a muted trumpet obbligato taking the vocal line against the trombones. The call and response between the brass and reeds is marvelous. Then Tommy Dorsey takes over with a subtly swinging solo before a mellow voiced tenor saxist plays a lower toned, very mellow rendition. The coda is particularly notable with Dorsey playing a half chorus before the abrupt ending.
