Tommy Dorsey Plays “Sentimental and Melancholy”

Posted about 1 year ago

"Sentimental and Melancholy" dates from the late 1930's and had music by Richard Whiting (Margaret's father) and lyrics by that great lyricist Johnny Mercer. Once again, we encounter the Dorsey band's star attraction, Lynn Roberts who sings a ballad for a change. The arrangement starts off with a unison passage for trombones with a briefly spiraling sax filler before Tommy Dorsey and the trombones take over, leading into a brass and sax duet before Lynn Roberts sings one of her patented vocals that manages to engage while at the same time connecting all the dots before a full ensemble break leads into a final coda.
