Gene Krupa Plays “Disc Jockey Jump”

Posted about 3 years ago

Among the many members of the Krupa band in this era was Gerry Mulligan. Krupa recalls,"What was Gerry like in those days? As I recall him, he was a sort of temperamental kid who always wanted to expound on a lot of his musical ideas." One of his ideas was this composition, co-written with Gene Krupa called "Disc Jockey Jump" which became a great favorite with Krupa's admirer's. It begins with a light as feather approach of cool jazz on piano and rhythm section leading into a colorful display between muted brass and saxes with lightly explosive interjections before alto saxist Harvey Terrell comes in with Park-like phrases before trombonist Dick Taylor comes in with an angular solo. Let's not forget Krupa on drums which are delivered with all of his flare before the alto saxist Harvey Terrell comes back into fore with more crisply articulated phrasings before the trumpeter Al Porcino comes in with a hotly swinging solo before the coda leads us back into the repetition of the opening.
