Gene Krupa Performs “Leave Us Leap”

Posted about 3 years ago

The war years were a torture for many performers and listeners. No new records nearly killed off the music industry and historically, it helped silence any further data we may have of musicians and singers from all genres. For Krupa, it was also the worst of time. He was brought up on fake marijuana possession charges levelled against him by a disgruntled valet who thought he could squeeze money out of Krupa. Krupa languished in jail before being exonerated. His band and reputation gone, he took any job available. Two bandleaders benefitted in bringing Gene Krupa back to the forefront. First Krupa resumed his seat with Benny Goodman then went over to Tommy Dorsey's band when Buddy Rich entered the Marines. That last assignment resulted in Krupa's rebirth as he sparked the Dorsey band like none other. Krupa then rebuilt a band that went nowhere because of its huge body of strings. However, he jettisoned the strings and came back with a bebop band playing the new jazz with fairly good results. Eddie Finckel came in as arranger and composer. One of the big explosive hits for Krupa was "Leave Us Leap." And leap it does with a full bodied sound with plenty of moments for Louis Zito to play some hot licks on drums while Krupa lead the band. It jumps with a hard drive and is quite catchy. Tony Russo on muted trumpet and tenor saxist Charlie Ventura play it as hot as Leon Cox's trombone and Teddy Napoleon at the piano.
