Benny Goodman Quartet Plays “Runnin’ Wild”

Posted over 3 years ago

Actually, "gallop" should be the word for this particular performance. You heard the band playing this song, now it's the quartet's turn at this tune. There is plenty of back and forth between Benny, Lionel and Teddy Wilson. Indeed, around the ninety-fourth chorus, Gene Krupa yells out, "One more time" then switches to his bass drum which will make even the bravest listener limp from the frenzied pace of this performance.

That is mind-blowing.  All four are at the top of their game.

    Spike,

The Goodman-Wilson-Hampton-Krupa quartet were an unbeatable team. All of their RCA 78s were best sellers and helped introduce people to samller combo recordings. What makes these work so well is that the musicianship was pretty high--and also that these were all young men in their twenties and thirties creating this music. Staggers the old grey matter to think that that much talent was in the hands of these young people.

    Enjoy the music!

I'm more familiar with his septet, because I was checking out Charlie Christian, but these guys do fine as they are.  Maybe the quartet recordings were done after Christian died.

    Spike,

Actually these recordings by the quartet were made just about a year and a half before Charlie Christian joined the Goodman band. The addition of the guitar was a brilliant stroke of genius at a time when electric guitars were rarely heard. Thanks to Christian, it became a standard for electric guitars to be heard in jazz. Christian contributed to the cool jazz movement more than he could have know.

    Yours sincerely,
