Al Hirt Plays "I'll Never Smile Again"
Ruth Lowe was in a depressed state when she wrote the words and music to "I'll Never Smile Again." Her husband just passed away suddeny in 1940 and to bring herself out of her depressed state, she turned to music to express her quiet anguish. She sent the song onward to Tommy Dorsey who immediately knew he had a major hit on his hands and recorded the song straight away. The result was the biggest seller ANYONE ever had had in record sales and the sheet music sales went through the roof. "I'll Never Smile Again" has since become another well-loved classic song from a golden age of music.
A slow, low register upward scale leading into strings is Marty Paich's writing for Al Hirt who plays with a beautifully rich and dark tone backed by muted murmuring strings accompanied by a soft rustle of the keyboard and harp with graceful counter melodies surrounding Al Hirt's sweetly sensitive trumpet. A fluid cadenza ends this performance on a bank of strings murmuring low.

beautiful snapshot of a somber mood...two things that would not seem to possibly co-exist. your choice of pic is perfectly phrased as well...
Dear scotfree,
I try to have a mental picture of what the song is trying to say then find something to try to go along with it. Thank you for writing such a sensitive note!
Yours truly,
