Frank Sinatra with Tommy Dorsey Perform "Marie"

Posted over 1 year ago

Irving Berlin wrote many songs which have passed into the American musical lexicon. One those songs is "Marie" which he wrote in 1928. It wasn't until ten years later that Tommy Dorsey had a head arrangement made of the song complete with the guys in the band chanting sarcastic lyrics behind the romantic tonsils of Jack Leonard, then the band's resident crooner. The idea took on after the recording became a hit over the objections of one of the record producers at RCA Victor records. But then, the song became a straight jacket out of which other songs were tried with similar success in the same formula. Here, from a December 12, 1940 radio broadcast, Frank Sinatra takes on this song with full honors as he croons with the guys in the band singing some racy commentary! Tommy Dorsey takes on the vocal line for a chorus or two before Frank Sinatra comes in with the famous vocal line. complete with the chanting band members. Bunny Berigan gets a shot at playing one of his great trumpet solos. Definitely he was having a grand night. Other solos include Tommy on trombone, Boomie Richman who plays a pair of choruses, each one more inspired than the last. A marvelous performance that is a summing up of the contributions by everyone.
