Frank Sinatra with Tommy Dorsey Perform "Deep Night"
Before there was Bing Crosby or even Vaughan DeLeath, there was Rudy Vallee who sang through a megaphone and who became, through sheer strength of will, a voice heard by millions on what was the first of the big time variety shows on radio. That was in 1929 and he was still a popular star on radio until 1942. Valle was also a song writer of no small means. Witness his creation of "Deep Night" which he wrote the lyrics to Charlie Henderson's music in 1929. This particular performance features a Spanish announcer with all announcements in Spanish. We get to hear Vallee himself introducing the song, also in Spanish. Tommy Dorsey, on muted trombone, with the band, vamps under the introductions. The radio broadcast of June 19, 1940 features a marvelous fluid performance by Frank Sinatra, once more at his very early best. The song also features the "Marie" idea of having the band chanting counter lyrics in the background that is strong on macho viewpoints. By this time, I believe its Ziggy Elman playing the lead trumpet solo before clarinetist Johnny Mince plays a poignant solo full of painful longing. Thus went this June 19, 1940 big band remote broadcast!
