Frank Sinatra with Tommy Dorsey Perform "Blue Moon"

Posted over 1 year ago

Jean Harlow, the blonde bombshell of the 1930's, was the original inspiration of "Blue Moon" when Lorenz Hart wrote the lyrics with the song title "Make Me A Star." Unfortunately, the song was cut from the movie. In 1934, new lyrics and a new title were created by Lorenz Hart for Richard Rodgers' melody. The new title was "Blue Moon" which rapidly caught the imagination of America's listeners and the song became a smash hit for Rodgers and Hart. For this November 21, 1940, the chart reflects the Dorsey band's new direction with a jaunty performance with an interesting riff on reeds backing Tommy Dorsey's swinging muted trombone with sharp asides from the brass. Backing up Frank Sinatra's romantic interpretation are some border line chants by the band which reflect a swaggering masculine line of thought. Don Lodice plays a muscular exposition on his tenor sax followed in succession by Jimmy Mince on clarinet.
