Mahalia Jackson Sings "Move On a Little Higher"

Posted over 2 years ago

As a fitting tribute to Mahalia Jackson, I contribute her performance of a gosple song which is a personal favorite of mine: "Move On Up A Little Higher." This represents only a sample of how great of a vocalist she actually could be in the studio. And she gave it her all the same as if she were in front an audience. She was indeed an original, pulsating force in the world of music, taking people of all countries, colors, creeds and races to new heights of inspiration, making them feel better for just having heard one of the world's greatest gospel artists. And we are all the richer for having heard the clarion voice of Mahalia Jackson.

    Spike,

It is very unusual to find too many people my age and older who don't like Mahalia Jackson. She really made an impact on everyone who ever heard her voice. If she seemed to personalize the music beyond many people's understanding, so what? It's like trying to shut off the water from flowing over Niagara Falls. I'll always have a soft spot for Mahalia Jackson's way of singing.

    Yours truly,
