Fritz Reiner Conducts Maurice Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess"

Posted over 2 years ago

This is surely one of the greatest pieces of music. Out of thinking about the words, the music just sings out with a majesty that is noble and haunting at the same time.

I chose this particular rendition of this great work because of Fritz Reiner's very emotionally quiet performance with beautifully played French horns that don't blare out at one in other performances. The pictures accompanying this performance are of Fritz Reiner, a sharp faced almost Bela Lugosi looking character. He was a true genius, giving the Chicago Symphony much of its characteristic sheen.
