Bud Shank Plays the soundtrack to "Slippery When Wet"

Posted 25 days ago

In between periods of experimenting with new music, Bud Shank also appeared as a session player, his flute or alto sax being heard on the soundtracks of "The Sandpiper," "The Thomas Crown Affair," and the Bruce Brown surfer movies "Slippery When Wet" and "Barefoot Adventure."

...This is awesome.  It works, on every level. The beat poets of old would have understood.  Any word about the identity of the bass player?

DMDM, Glad you're a fan of this film. I caught it when TCM was having a Bruce Brown festival of which this was the first and, in many ways, the best. It's hard to believe that this film was shot in 1958. Then, to prove everybody was on a budget, the soundtrack was done live with Bruce and the film in one room and Bud Shank and his quartet in the next room. The bass player was Gary Peacock with Billy Bean on piano, Chuck Flores on drums, and Dennis Budimir on guitar with Shelly Manne coming in on drums for a few licks. It's a masterful film with lots of staggeringly beautiful shots of the surf.

    Yours truly,
