Nat King Cole Sings "When I Fall in Love"
-
Artist:
When Victor Young was a member of the first violin section of The Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski's direction, he little dreamed that one day he would be composing and writing music for the movies and for records. "When I Fall in Love" came from Young's pen in 1952 and was first recorded by Doris Day in 1952. Since then, many a vocalist have wrapped their vocal chords around this lovely flower with varying degrees of success. In 1956, Nat King Cole recorded what many have considered the definitive version for his album "Love Is The Thing" backed by Gordon Jenkins' delicate arrangement.

I am the niece of the late Victor Young and I must dispute that he ever played with the Philadelphia Philharmonic. He went from Chicago to NYC and then Hollywood. Good story though and I always say "just make sure you spell his name right".

Dear velveteyes,
Thank you very much for being honest with me! There are many stories down through the years that I have heard about your uncle and this was one of them! Seriously, I have the greatest admiration for the man. He was a master composer for the films--every film score that he wrote can stand on its own, which is not what many can do! His songs are in a league of their own and are immortal masterpieces for the grace and flow of the melodic lines and the way he delicately underscored the words so that the meaning comes through.
Such a dee pleasure to hear from you! I feel honored!
Yours very truly,
musicfriend
thank you very much for the wonderful post on my uncle (Oct. 24, 2009) and his unique talents. I love reading about him and I am going to save your blog about him. One correction, he was born in 1899 not 1900. I would have never known, but I have a copy of the Chicago 1900 census taken in June and it lists my grandparents and a baby son. I found it in doing research for my family tree.
Good luck, Musicfriend
