Ella Fitzgerald Sings "One Note Samba"

Posted over 2 years ago

Embarking on a solo career in 1942, Ella continued recording for Decca Records long after her Chick Webb era. In 1946, she began her association with Norman Granz, appearing at his first series of Jazz At The Philharmonic. These appearances garnered a world wide admiration for Ella Fitzgerald and her remarkable artistry. And for a brief period, she appeared with her husband bassist Ray Brown's small group from 1948 - 1952.

Fitzgerald's world wide appeal can be savored in this 1969 appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival appearance with drummer Ed Thigpen, bassist Frank de la Rosa and pianist Tommy Flanagan on a sizzling rendition of "One Note Samba" which serves as a take off point for some of the most dazzling of all of Fitzgerald's scat singing, sounding almost like a horn in her instrumentally derived singing.
