Antonio Carlos Jobim & Deodato Play “The Girl From Ipanema”

Posted 3 months ago

"The Girl from Ipanema" waltzed onto the scene in 1964 with words and music by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes with English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The song quickly became the most recorded item during the 1960's and still evokes its charm to this day. The song itself describes a young woman noticed by one young man in particular. His thoughts turn to his own shyness in approaching such an enchantingly beautiful woman. The music is, by turns, lyrical and full of a tender, sensitive longing. Deodato offers an arrangement that is more of a kick to the rhythmic pulse, using strange shifts in harmonies to give this lovely song a different spin that is simply charming and engaging.
