Antonio Carlos Jobim: "A Felicidade"

Posted about 1 year ago
This is one of the best examples of how closely Jobim and Riddle worked with each other. Riddle’s orchestral accompaniment never overshadows Jobim, instead he gives the composer/singer one of great sparsely orchestrated counter melodies for which he was so well known.

  1. Bartleby says Such a wistful singing for a happy/melancholy tune. I agree with the orchestration is very subdued and incredibly mesmerising. Of course, Portuguese must one of those magical languages which sire music...

  2. DLuebbert says I love the performance. I'm used to hearing it played with all of the repeats in place. It does jar my ear a bit to hear the "Tristeza nao tem fim/Felicidade sim" line sung only once at the beginning. The melody is so pretty there and the rhyme is so good, it sounds right to hear it twice. They must have linearized the tune so they could keep in the bounds that were expected for radio play back in that era. If they had gone through the entire 112 bar form of the song, the tune would have taken twice the time.
