Paul Desmond Plays "Autumn Leaves"

Posted over 4 years ago
“Autumn Leaves” meets Detective Phillip Marlowe! The chart is very darkly written by Bob Prince. The dark setting befits the mournful words with a vulnerable performance by Paul Desmond with misty strings in the background. This particular track was never on the original album release and had to wait for nearly thirty years before being released.

  1. Jotaneto says Nat King Cole introduced me to this song and ,maybe, for this reason, I consider his interpretation the better. This song is, in my opinion, one of the best of all times. Paul Desmond played it very well. Good memories. Thanks.

  2. Bartleby says "Les feuilles mortes" is such a potent classic by Joseph Kosma with original lyrics by Jacques... (This is how I first heard it). But then of course, "Autumn Leaves" came along and more or less replaced my youthful memories with those of Miles Davis's interpretation.

Bartleby, your sabbatical from MOG is still problematic for us.  You'll plunge back in, right?  Your comment here inspired me to come upon this video.

Years ago merely the wording of the title "Autumn Leaves," a song i had no interest in hearing, seemed to me the epitome of a vapid, saccharine, sentimental type of music that savage rock and roll and rock had rescued me from having to go near.  Since then, "Autumn Leaves" and its minions have insideously infected and vanquished me entirely, and allowed Paul Desmond to become one of my favorite musicians.  I love his version above.

musikfriend, when you see the words "Add To My Trusted Moggers" under my avatar next to my numerous but still too few comments over the years, does it register?  Some of my posts might interest you.  (Don't worry; nobody can hear me.)

    DMDM,

Your comments always register with me! When you got to this one particularly, you hit the spot--it's always intrigues me as to what the original words sound like versus the one Johnny Mercer penned for this song. Ah, those were the days with MOG when you could put anything here and people would go crazy! Always love your comments which always hit the spot with me! But tell anybody!
