Stravinsky: Birthday Ode (Happy Birthday, Carrfan)

Leonard Bernstein was somebody who achieved what no American has achieved before or since - the musical directorship of an international symphony orchestra, his chief post being musical director of the New York Philharmonic. In honor of my friend Carrfan, who has a birthday tomorrow (I couldn't wait!), here is Leonard Bernstein leading the New York Philharmonic in Igor Stravinsky's "Birthday Ode" originally written to celebrate his friend Pierre Monteux's 85th birthday (Carrfan is not THAT old!).

I like that.  The person or persons who originally composed the happy birthday song are rumored to be fastidious about protecting their right to collect royalties on it.  I suppose they were paid by Stravinsky and the New York Philharmonic.

    Spike,

I had heard rumors that the writers of the song "Happy Birthday" were very much into getting their royalties. I am sure that everybody from the New York Philharmonic are very much aware of them. As for Igor Stravinsky, he may have had contact with their lawyers over the matter as he, too, was interesting in making money for himelf. A music professor told me that the only reason that Stravinsky fashioned as many versions of "Petrouchka" and "Firebird" was due more to earning more money than he was insterested in writing arrangements of his two favorites scores. If you combine the intiails "I" and "S" you will see what Stravinsky was greatly interested in! Still, the above is a clever and witty salute to his friend Pierre Monteux!
