Terry Callier Plays “Keep Your Heart Rightâ€
-
Artist:
Terry Callier (1945 - ) is one of those musicians who worked hard without gaining much of a foothold. All of this in spite of his being a composer, singer, guitarist and being fluent whether he performs jazz, soul or folk music. In 1983, he retired from music after winning custody of his daughter Sundiata and, in order to provide a more stable existence, took classes in computer programming and, a year later, landed a job at the University of Chicago. He reemerged from obscurity in the 1990's when British DJ's began playing his older records from the 1960's and 1970's. Acid Jazz Records head Eddie Piller brought Callier to Britain to play in clubs which became for Callier a pleasant way to spend his short vacations from the University of Chicago. It was only after he won a United Nations' Time for Peace award for outstanding music for his 1998 album "Timepeace" that his colleagues learned of his original avocation which resulted in his promptly being fired. Callier today has continued recording, his most recent offering being a release in May 2009 titled "Hidden Conversations" with the group Massive Attack released on Mr. Bongo Records. "Keep Your Heart Right" is a pulsating piece with Callier providing the vocals that drive and propel the music forward with useful life affirming advice. The words reflect this personal philosophy of someone who has been there and back.

I like that. I've never heard of him. Did the University of Chicago say why they fired him?
Spike,
According to an article on Terry Callier, it said that he was fired from the University of Chicago because his music dates were eating into his time at work, so he was fired. People get fired for all sorts of reasons, never the right ones! At least Callier is doing what is his core interest and seems to be doing quite well without the University!
Glad you enjoyed his music!
Yours truly,
musikfriend
PS: I'm taking time off from Mog due to getting sick with a cold and simple exhaustian. I should be back after the Fourth!
Recharge thyself.
Spike,
Couldn't say it better myself!
