Queen Elizabeth I danced to it and William Shakespeare mentioned the lovely tune known as “Greensleeves†in his play “The Merry Wives of Windsor†but this song is actually much older. It was licensed for the first time to a Mr. Richard Jones in 1580 who described it as a Northern ditty of the Lady Greensleeves but even this isn’t the correct year. The original lyrics were set as a love poem. It wasn’t until 1865 when poet William Chatterton Dix wrote the lyrics by which we now know this beautiful song. Vikki Carr sings a wonderfully alive performance of this most beautiful of seasonal songs.

Damn that tune gels! Did Vikki hire the Gypsy Kings to play for her on this. Like both Spanish & English verses mixed together here. A true International Star Vikki Carr! Great posting friend.

My dear...your words... I'm impressed with the command of the language, and the flavor with which you describe this song and it's history. I too love this. Thanks.
