Tommy Dorsey Plays “Drumology” (A Tribute to Louis Bellson)

Posted about 3 years ago

No better tribute to this gentleman of the drums could be imagined. Bill Finegan remembers Louis Bellson as a sensitive and ego-less band player with a dynamic showmanship and soloist. Both Bellson and alto saxists Sid Cooper collaborated on "Drumology" which is a virtual dissertation on how to play drums. It was recorded on March 11, 1949 in one take, speaking volumes for how well-prepared the Dorsey band was at recording sessions. It's a hard driving piece that literally goes by in a fast blur of fury yet everything Bellson does is so clear and clean with a moving momentum of pulse that he virtually steals the show without actually trying, fitting his solos into the fabric of the band.
