Nelson Riddle Plays “For All We Know”

Posted about 3 years ago

Lyricist Sam M. Lewis and composer J. Fred Coots wrote "For All We Know" in 1934. Their song became an instant hit with the public with numerous recordings by all of the major singers and instrumentalists over the years. Nelson Riddle wrote his arrangement centering around the valve trombone of Juan Tizol, one of the great musicians in jazz. Tizol plays with great lyricism and beautiful phrasing. Strings play the main melodic strain with backing from the brass and muted trumpet fillers. Before the theme gets tossed briefly to them. Frank Flynn next takes part on his vibes in the romantic chart. Flynn then plays a perfect foil for the entire ensemble before the climax. For the coda, the brass take us into the decisively conclusive ending.
