Ok, I'm not studying for my geology exam like I should be... instead I'm figuring out what MOG is all about.
There are times when I go through and listen to all the songs I have from a particular artist. Sometimes it'll be Jason Mraz or Tristan Prettyman or Carbon Leaf or John Butler trio or Rascal Flatts (yes, Rascal Flatts)... you get the idea.
I've done this with John Mayer many times. I like most of his music. It took me awhile to get into. I wasn't a fan of No Such Thing in the beginning but eventually it grew on me... as is the case with many songs. I didn't thoroughly listen to Room for Squares until after Heavier Things had been released. My friends and I did some CD swapping before we went off to college, 3 years ago, and I acquired both albums.
I liked Heavier Things on the whole. Good for a pop album and all. I also got the Try! CD from a friend and liked that a lot. I love with artists put a new spin on their music. I think in their live music they have more freedom in playing their songs the way they want to and not how their record label or producer thinks they should... that's just my opinion. Try! had a blues vibe to it and for some reason you could tell this was the music John Mayer wanted to play.
Continuum came out in September and I went out and bought it. (As much as I download songs I do go out and support artists that I like.) Vultures and Gravity were both on the JMT CD so I already knew I liked them.
Continuum definitely deviated from the previous two pop albums. I believe John took complete control of this album and produced it himself, and of course, wrote all the songs. I really like the direction he went in. It's great when artists explore new sounds and find something that fits them. John Mayer took a chance. He risked losing the fan base that gave him his star status. There are those who liked his music before but don't like his new sound. They want him to keep putting out things like Your Body is a Wonderland and Daughters. Then there are those who didn't really like his music before. I tell these people to check out Continuum.
Anyway, I guess I'm going through a hardcore John Mayer phase this week. Vultures, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, Belief, and Bold As Love are my favorites right now.
I love this clip. Makes me want to pick up an electric guitar and learn how to play it (not that I'll ever be any good at it). Maybe I'll learn acoustic one of these days...
Anyway. Every time I listen to Continuum I find new reasons for liking it. That's when you know it's a good album. The songs don't get old. Bold As Love is the latest song that has grown on me and which I really like. I'd upload the song on here but apparently it's "not an mp3." So find another means!
