I’ve a special place in my black heart for popular artists working in much-derided genres who nonetheless do great work. Work on par, or (shock! horror!) better, than that from mediums or genres that most people automatically assume to be high art – like theatre, ballet, or dubstep. The world of pop is a much-derided genre. It’s seen as frivolous, fey and, indeed, gay. Of course, if anybody said so to my face, I wouldn’t hesitate to beat on their chest while crying, “Y... MORE
Here's my argument:
This stands in contrast to the more egalitarian, socioeconomically diverse indie-rock scene of the ’80s. Once Nirvana and Pearl Jam gained hold of blue-collar music fans in the early ’90s, indie rock became a matter of access and privilege. To account for the rise of privilege in indie rock, many bands saved cred by forgoing musical chops, high production values or traditional song structures. You can see this tendency in low-fi and twee successes like... MORE
Ahhhhh....Labor Day. It's so bittersweet. On the one hand, it's a long weekend. On the other hand, it marks the unofficial end of summer. And what do you do to mark the end of another eventful summer? You party your ass off. I don't know about you, but I plan on throwing down this weekend. As of right now, I am keeping myself open to any and all suggestions as to what to do, preventing myself from committing to one such event that could possibly suck. This ... MORE
OK, I am, or try to be resistent to hype - but in this case, these guys deserve it.

The album, though, is great. Just really, really strong - in the same way that Amy Winehouse's Back to Black was two years ago.
Most highly recommended for anyone who likes Yo La Tengo, the Lefte Bank, the Specials. The influences are kind of diverse...
What more needs to say about a band that is less then 3 years old and has put out a note perfect album, to boot? Nothing really. So I'll let the music do the talking. Here is one of the rare cases in which the band lives up to the hype. I dare you to not get these songs stuck in your head.

sorry if that may seem a bit lewd, it is the title given to this friday night by my dear friend and the reason why this first entry must be cut short. anyways, it seems like my interest in music has reached a new height today by joining this mog blog dog? idk? i don't like to talk about myself much, not much of a narcissist these days, sucks. but i do love music so here i am. i leave on a happy note, it is friday and the memorial weekend is just beginning in which the ce... There is something intriguing and almost unnatural about the fact that I am continuously drawn towards Vampire Weekend. The light-hearted melodies with simple accompaniment of organ, harpsichord, strings, and flute, turn the clock back to the times of invincibility and carefree college days. Vampire Weekend is a four member New York City indie band, that slightly nods towards the afro-pop genre with a hint of ska. The 2/4 percussion, accented with African elements and an o... MORE
