Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs

The album title is kind of a joke, after all Yo la Tengo are never going to be a popular band. But at the same time they are a much loved and critically acclaimed band, so in some ways it could be seen as an honest statement....more here.

Yo La Tengo – Tripod, Dublin

Yo La Tengo are the anti-hype band. Twelve albums into their career the Hoboken crew continue to gather new fans but never lose one. Unlike other acts with such a large back catalogue, Yo La Tengo don’t have an entry point, they don’t have a definitive album. Each record they create is paradigm shift to…

Yo La Tengo + Jackie-O Motherfucker - Crystal Ballroom (Portland, OR; Oct. 20, 2009)

Buttons. On the banner were buttons. All shapes and sizes of buttons, hanging down from the rafters. At first, I didn’t think anything of it. Many bands have banners; there is nothing new about that. But as the Yo La Tengo show rolled on, floating through genres and defying classification, I saw that maybe there was something deeper wrapped up in those stray buttons. Maybe the buttons were like.

Review: Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs (* * * 1/2)

If you’ve already read any reviews of Yo La Tengo’s twelfth studio album, you’re sure to have seen something like the following statement: Yo La Tengo has been around for a long time (25 years to be exact). And while that’s not exactly news, it’s actually worth mentioning – not only because it’s a remarkable accomplishment in and of itself, but because the band has been so incredibly

Yo La Tengo played a triumphant set at Roseland Ballroom on September 25th. The show was full of fun and surprises including MC duties by John Oliver who assuaged the wait in between sets between The Black Lips and Yo La Tengo. In the front lobby guests were greeted by Susquehanna Tool and Die Co., [...]

Who needs money?!

This month is the 79th anniversary of the great stock market crash that sparked the Depression. To honor this anniversary contempo Wall Street wunderkinds have decided to offer us what appears to be a failed pilot for a reality TV show that suggests banks are not nearly as prepared for disaster as your local cub scout troop. Douglas Rushkoff expertly explains their descent into poorly orchest...

Yo La Tengo: December 27, 2008 Maxwell’s - Flac and MP3 Downloads

[photo from Ira's Hanukkah Diary] At night seven of the Hanukkah celebration, Yo La Tengo displayed the most compelling characteristics of the band — their versatility and encyclopedic knowledge of popular music. As the band took the stage with an aggressive "Sugarcube", the expectation was that the set would feature the rocking YLT. In [...]

....Yo La Tengo is one of our great "under most peoples' radar screen" bands, and its a shame. They're an adventerous & blasphemous band deeply immersed in the musical culture they idolize and cauterize. Capable of Sonic Youth style mystic shronk & Keren Ann delicacy...often in the same track, YLT boldly explore, with humor & commitment, every nook & cranny that strikes their fancy.

and sometimes the music just hits you

Got in a bit ago from another scorcher here in Minnesota. Started off the morning with a 9-2 victory in soccer, had a stellar game in net if I dont say so myself. From there I headed out to a graduation party, I guess it is one of the perks of being a teacher and those perks are few. My family and I were on our way home when I remembered something a co-worker had told me. He told me that Kohls ...

.....You owe it to yourself to see Yo La Tengo perform. Granted its a roll of the dice, YLT can do so many things. They may hit you with blizzards of dischordant gelatinous gobs of feedback or bright little pop tunes of wry wit and surprising depth. They are charming and engaging & with a receptive audience they really soar. They are obviously well versed in the history of the culture & the ...
