When I was a teenager, I thought that the best way to handle feelings of depression was to wallow in them. I'd stick on something suicidally bleak and think about death. I don't exactly remember the turning point, but one day I guess I got tired of being so utterly miserable, and decided to get my act together. Now when I get in a bit of a funk, I put on something more like this track by the Ja...
Sometimes I stay awake at night worrying about the important stuff in life, things like: do the Japanese have heritage acts? I'll sleep easily tonight; they do!Exhibit A: The Sadistic Mika Band. In the mid-70s they moulded an obsession with Roxy Music, David Bowie and shopping on the King's Road into a delightful output of songs that often included "boogie" in the title. They went through seven...
.......................................Track taken from the album BGM.Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) is a Japanese electropop band, formed in 1978. They were ranked No.2 in a list of Japan's top 100 musicians by HMV. The band is renowned as having pioneered the Synthpop and Electropop music genres, along with Germany's Kraftwerk. The principal members are Haruomi Hosono (bass, keyboards), Yukihir...
...from the "This'll-Learnya-to-Post-Your-Thoughts-Quicker" Dept: I just heard a piece on Day to Day with Alex Chadwick ( the radio equivalent of the eZine "*Slate*":http://slate.com ) that reminded me of a conversation I'd had a month or so ago while chatting with a friend over in Europe who asked me to cop one of those iTunes gift cards and added extra emphasis on the "US" part...because tu...

"Yellow Magic Orchestra":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Magic_OrchestraThis song got me moving this morning, and led to a very productive day. Thought I'd post it for that reason along with more obvious ones. Enjoy.
A bit more from Sakamoto and company. Not a whole lot happens in this classic track by YMO, "Light In Darkness", there are no vocals, the dynamics are pretty even, and even the warm analog sounds are pretty minimal. But for some reason, it's my fave Yellow Magic Orchestra track (and BTW, 808 State did a killer remix version of this). The video, which was shot live in 1981, features some really ...
I guess when people went to the World's Fair in the Fifties & Sixties, saw all these automated kitchens and hovercars, they figured that would be what the world was like in 1980. They didn't have those fairs anymore when I was growing up, but when Yellow Magic Orchestra came out in the late 1970s, I sure thought they sounded like the future. The video is pretty funny, totally cheesy analog synth...
This is a great live performance by YMO of Behind The Mask. Michael Jackson liked it, wrote crappy lyrics to it, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins recorded it and made it AOR rock. Anyway, here's the real version from 1983
Reunions are essential for the global Live Earth concerts being organized by Al Gore to save the planet from melting. The newly-reunited Genesis will play the London Live Earth concert, while the newly-reunited Smashing Pumpkins will play Live Earth New York/Jersey. So its only fair that Live Earth Tokyo gets its own reunited headliners. And they will when Japanese electro-pop trio Yellow Magic...
It's been a day. Monday to be exact. When I got into work, the computer network was down and stayed down for three hours. Try working these days without access to e-mail, Word, or any database. The staff picked today to play "stupid questions". Almost twenty minutes to go over a scenario that I could pick holes in the first five minutes. And it threatened to rain any minute and since it pour...
In my Eyes, Takahashi, Sakamoto and Hosono, both as YMO and separately, are some of the most talented muscians on this planet. Now, watch them bring the ruckus to Soul Train in 1980 and school Don Cornelius on electro.
