Xiu Xiu, Women As Lovers (Kill Rock Stars) six out of ten stars For some, there is an appeal in suffering and in dread. In pain and in anxiety, they feel most genuine and most alive. To be cheerful, to be pleasant, to be content would be to live a false life shrouded by dumb numbness. Some have called this an unasked for disease of over-consciousness, of being all too keenly aware of the pains intrinsic to living. And under this sort of clarity or distortion—whichever wa... MORE

Damaged noise-smith Jamie Stewart at his best.
So there's this band called Xiu Xiu and they sing a cover of the David Bowie/Queen collaboration: under Pressure
That's about as much as I know. This is lifted from a mix I've been given.
(and thanks for the pics)
I went looking for an autoharp moment to add to my little post about Basia Bulat, and I recalled my first, most excellent encounter with rock autoharp was when the mighty Xiu Xiu came to town years ago.
I have mixed feelings about Xiu Xiu.
On the one hand, I think they make the most interesting music I have come across for years. (Thanks, Leobu.)
On the other hand, the songs are gloomy and I don't think many people I know would like them. And I have a nagging anxiety that if James Blunt had been a sensitive art student instead of an army captain, this is the sort of music he would be making.
I still luv 'em though.

When Xiu Xiu played at my school few months ago they did "Hello From Eau Claire" and it was a Magical Concert Moment. You know, like when you hear a song you never have before, but it feels like it was the whole reason you went to the show? Of course I intended to track it down and never did. Then yesterday I had a friend's radio show on in the other room and an oddly familiar tune caught my ear. Reunited! Of course the static recording is a little bit disappointing after ... MORE
Despite the relative seriousness of my taste in music—which has been variously described as egocentric, elitist, extremely pretentious, annoying, loud, and music to slit your wrists to—I do have a sense of humor, in fact, a quite prominent one. In addition to my responsibilities at the Chicago Maroon, I also write for the campus humor publication, The Chicago Shady Dealer. While most articles focus on topical campus humor, I thought you moggers would appreciate this articl... MORE
I don't think Xiu Xiu got their fair share this year. The Air Force is definitely on my "The Shit" list. I'm not sure where yet, however...any suggestions?
I'm thinking middle top five, or maybe #9...but then again...you don't know what else I've loved this year, do you?
There is this band and I love it. Called Xiu Xiu (shoo-shoo).
At first it's quite hard to get around, but like all good music it grows on you.
Now with the affection you've obtained listneing to the song leads you to the world of complete supreme awesomeness.
Give them a shot, they are totally worth it.
This is such an amazing album. I love how it's really...I dont know....slow in a way, but really good. You can obviously tell is one of Xiu Xiu's first albums, and has alot of their songs in the accousitc versons on this cd. (And you can also hear the commentary during the recording).
