AMG Review of Concert Ensemble at the Berliner Jazztage
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThe Woody Shaw Quintet (featuring the trumpeter/leader, altoist René McLean, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Stafford James and drummer Louis Hayes) were joined by tenor saxophonist Frank Foster and trombonist Slide Hampton for this frequently exciting and often quite advanced Berlin concert. The obscure originals are given lengthy treatment (Joe Chambers' "Hello to the Wind" is nearly 17 minutes long) and yet there are no slow moments. The solos are uniformly creative and often quite explorative. [Concert Ensemble at the Berliner Jazztage was reissued on CD in 2006 and contains bonus tracks.]
