Will Stratton

my pick for best summer album debut

If Joshua Radin and the gentlemen of Kings of Convenience partook in a giant lovefest and somehow produced a child, that child would be Will Stratton. His debut album, What the Night Said, packs a powerful punch of catchy banjo and acoustic guitar parts paired with his mellow and beautiful voice. Listen to: Katydid & Sunol for a glimpse of what this guy's all about. Over and out.

MP3 of the Day #120: Will Stratton

Will Stratton is a stunning singer-songwriter in the same vein as Nick Drake and Sufjan Stevens. His debut, What the Night Said, was written when he was just 19 (Sufjan Stevens makes an appearance on it). Now he’s finally completed his followup, No Wonder, recorded between his classes at Bennington College. Dedication! Will’s music has been [...]

Will Stratton: No Wonder (Reviews)

Following his quiet stunner of a debut album, this 22-year-old folk artist just proved that lightning, indeed, can strike the same place twice. When the 19-year-old Will Stratton released his debut album What the Night Said back in 2007, few would've guessed that this tenderfooted Nick Drake acolyte would amount to much of anything. After all, how many "next big thing" folk artists have come and...

Will Stratton - "Your California Sky" and "Who Will" (MP3) (Mixed Media)

Will Stratton is in the habit of releasing music for free, so it comes as no surprise that he's giving away a couple from his new album, No Wonder. The lyrics aren't anything special, with nary an inspired image between the two songs, the kind of interchangeable ruminations that do nothing to distinguish him from any number of other songwriters, but they are inoffensive and pleasant enough, and...

Free and legal MP3 from Will Stratton (young singer/songwriter w/ gorgeous, reverb-laced tune)

"Who Will" - Will Stratton Gorgeous and swaying, but with a deep-down sense of gravity. (Anyone remember the old Fleetwood Mac instrumental "Albatross"? This evokes that, pleasantly.) I like the sonic interplay between the crisply strummed acoustic guitar at the front of the mix and that big dark open space underneath--space created seemingly by just a lonesome-prairie guitar and Stratton's...

Will Stratton: Perfect for a cold weekend
21 days ago

Wunderkid Will Stratton’s newest LP, No Wonder, dropped earlier this week and I’d be remiss not to share my thoughts. I know very little about Stratton, except that Mr. Nobody, Sufjan Stevens, made an appearance on his first album, What The Night Said, which garnered much critical praise. His voice is eerily reminiscent of Nick [...]

it is now on itunes and emusic. if you like nick drake, red house painters/sun kil moon/ mark kozelek, sufjan, elliott smith, wilco, jim o'rourke, hayden, yann tiersen, the kinks, the beatles, or music in general, give it a chance. you might like the damned thing. oh, and sufjan plays oboe on the first and last tracks. he isn't credited, though, as per his wishes. the thing should have come out...

New Tunes: Will Stratton

After meeting Will Stratton you have to hope that the old saying, "nice guys finish last", is complete and utter garbage. Stratton is the very definition of nice, a cordial young fellow willing to talk to any and all who approach him after a show and it helps that his music is so easy to fall for. With his subtle voice and terrific guitar strumming, Stratton has begun to establish himself as a ...

Review: Will Stratton - No Wonder (* * * *)

It was all too easy to miss Will Stratton in 2007, as I found recently. I hadn't heard a thing about the guy before a couple weeks ago when I had the opportunity to listen to his superb sophomore effort - No Wonder. Being impressed, I tracked down his 07 debut - What the Night Said (which was - astonishingly - recorded just after his senior year in high school) - and then wondered why much more...

Will Stratton: Your California Sky [mp3]

Where have all the soft melodies gone? It seems that at one point, they were a must. But, to the wayside of electronic-induced euphoria and the return of avant garde, did all these sweet little surely dissipate from the mainstream? Will Stratton understands the significance of these beautiful little numbers. “Your California Sky”, from Stratton’s sophomore album No Wonder, is so entranci
