The premise behind Wevie Stonder is refreshing and unusual for electronic music, specifically IDM: be funny in the face of laptop composers demanding their music be taken seriously at all times. But sometimes this premise overshadows an important thing about their work: it's actually engaging, challenging, and enjoyable. Like a good Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant comedy, the humor is omnipresent, but there is such quality music and it's easy to miss what's going on. This is especially evident on the opening "Way in Through the Sea Lion," a brilliant exercise of Brian Wilson melodies and frantic production ŕ la Telefon Tel Aviv. Imagine Ween if they were given copious amounts of sugar, soda, and laptops, and you get the idea. Like the Blechdoms, this is seriously funny serious stuff.
