AMG Review of Where'd Ya Stay Last Night?
Greg Adams
All Music Guide"Where'd Ya Stay Last Night" is a driving country song with a bit of luegrass flavor courtesy of an energetic dobro picker and an uncredited background singer with a distinctive high lonesome sound. The song made the Top 15 and was another solid performance from Webb Pierce, who continued to enjoy a strong following into the late '60s. The album has a number of singalong allads of the kind Pierce seemed to like, some of which he had recorded before. "I Overlooked an Orchid," for example, is a re-recording of a tune Pierce first cut in the early '50s. He recorded so many songs, it probably reached a point where he couldn't remember them all. Pierce's version of "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)" pushes it farther into the country field than Marty Robbins' hit version did, and "You Mean Ol' Moon" is a fine new original and one of few up-tempo songs. Otherwise, Pierce concerns himself with country classics such as "Your Cheatin' Heart," "The Wild Side of Life," and "Make the World Go Away" -- album filler for sure, but Pierce's one-of-a-kind voice makes everything at least a little bit interesting.
