Weekend Weather Report # 9 - Live In Japan (continued)...

(9)
Blog post image preview Sorry for the absence.  New job's been keeping me busy (yay!) Keeping with the chronological approach to this series, although the live recordings made in Japan in 1972 were only partially released (per my last WRW post) on Weather Report's second album, the full concert was remastered and eventually released some 25 years later on CD!  Only available as an import, it's interesting to compare the audio quality of the new masters to the original release, and of course, it'... There's more then a few gems on this disc, but lo and behold this is one that fits into catagories by other moggers! I've decided to make it my "song of the week" - enjoy.   -Zawinul from a late concert of the Zawinul Syndicate.

Was There Electric Bass Before Leo?

Jurassic Basses By Mikael Jansson & Scott Malandrone | January, 2000 There’s no doubt Leo Fender forever changed the world of bass in 1951, when he launched his Precision Bass. But a couple of recent finds have cast his innovations in a new light. Sure, many had tried to amplify the double bass before Fender performed his feat: Ampeg, Rickenbacker, Regal, and Vega all made production-model solidbody electric uprights in the 1930s—and as early as the ’20s, Gibson’... Weekend Weather Report #8 - "I Sing The Body Electric"

(13)
Blog post image preview     Weather Report’s second album release for CBS was comprised of several studio tracks along with some edited recordings of the band’s live performances in Japan. The core founders were still in place, but the original percussionists from the debut album, Airto and Mouzon, were gone, replaced by Eric Gravatt on drums and Dom Um Romao on percussion. Entitled "I Sing The Body Electric", taken from the first line of Walt Whitman’s poem by the same name, Weather Repor... MORE

RIP Joe Zawinul

Free music video of Black Market (5)
This quote stood out when I was reading one of Joe's many wonderful obituaries on the net: “There is no difference between a Stradivarius or a beautiful synthesizer sound. People make a big mistake in putting down electronic music. Yes, it’s been misused and abused, but that’s true of every music. There is nothing wrong with electronic music as long as you’re putting some soul behind the technology.” He was an absolute trailblazer of electronic music, or more precisely ... MORE

Blog post image preview Back in July I posted a classic Joe Zawinul track to celebrate his 75th birthday and wished him many more. Sadly, that wish was not to be. Only a matter of weeks later, he died of skin cancer at his home in Malibu. Here's my favorite all-time Zawinul composition from the amazing "Heavy Weather" album. R.I.P. Joe, thank you for all the wonderful music. You will be sorely missed.

The Best Bassists?

Listening to Birdland, and thinking about how amazing Jaco Pastorius' bass playing sounds. This got me thinking about who i would consider in the best bassists ever. I personally would probably include Rick Danko of The Band, Roger Waters, the Jam's Bruce Foxton and Ben Folds Five's Robert Sledge, however I'd be interested to hear other suggestions
