I wish I had a cat that told me when to snap out of it and throw a big party. I originally became a fan of this singer during a deep listening session (lights out, pre nap) set to Propagandhi's album 'How to Clean Everything'. He was the guy that sang the line 'stilted conversation colored blue' which gets made fun of in the liner notes. Dont ask me why I think it is possible to fall asleep to Propagandhi, or why I admit to reading liner notes. Anyway, I was delighted to... MORE
Today's the beginning of the Tournament of Hearts in Canada, so I thought this was an appropriate song to post.
I was listening to 'The World' the other day (on NPR,) when I heard this song. The interview was interesting, featuring the lead singer of the band who spoke about the early years of the band, some of his influences when writing the songs, and about their latest CD. The song that I have uploaded here was inspired when the writer saw the painting 'Sun in an Empty Room' by Edward Hopper. You can check out the interview yourself at this web address: http://www.theworld.... MORE

I am FINALLY getting around to listening to the latest Weakerthans record and it is a real gem. Is it me, or is like 90% of the quality stuff coming out anymore, from either Canada or Sweden? Never ceases to amaze me.
Winnipeg's finest havd refined their indie rock sound to perfection(i hear shades of Granddaddy and Wilco)...and the guys actually go in a few other directions on this album with excellent results.
Here is one of my favorite tracks from the new album.
I'm tremendously excited ... My current Canadian musical heroes, the Weakerthans, will actually be paying a visit to my fair city (that would be Phoenix, for those of you not in the know) in a couple weeks here. Since I had barely any hope that they'd ever head far enough south of the 49th parallel as to be within traveling distance, it excites me to no end that a quick cross-town jaunt on Sept. 29 is all that's required of me. Trouble is, I can't get anyone to go with... MORE
Late afternoon, another day is nearly doneA darker grey is breaking through a lighter oneA thousand sharpened elbows in the undergroundThat hollow hurried sound, feet on polished floorAnd in the dollar store, the clerk is closing upAnd counting loonies trying not to say I hate Winnipeg The driver checks the mirror seven minutes lateThe crowded riders' restlessness enunciatesThe Guess Who sucked, the Jets were lousy anywayThe same route everydayAnd in the turning laneSo... is obviously The Weakerthans. And I've been waiting for what feels like ages for new music to satisfy my addiction. Finally, it's here! The band's new single, Civil Twilight, was released just the other day and I couldn't be more thrilled! It's a little bit more upbeat and pop-rocky than their usual fare but in no way is that a bad thing. For starters, it's catchy as hell (in a good way) and John K. Samson can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. To make matters even mor... MORE
The tyranny of the MOG is such that, with a click of a button and a potent connection, I can beat old horses, resurrect late nights with beer and cigarettes on concrete steps, and deliver to you music we've all heard before, but certainly love anyways.
Seven years later, Left & Leaving remains a great album.
It's always hard to say: "that's my favorite something" because you most of the time this will do other things injustice. I love Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker and tons of other bands. But still, there is one band that outshines them all. Simply the best lyrics, fantastic songs and a heartfelt warmth and love of music and everything they do that you just have to love. i remember when i bought their first record on the day it came out in Germany, just because John K. Samson use... MORE
If there's any album that's totally familiar and comfortable to me, it's Left and Leaving by The Weakerthans. When I say that it's like a well-worn sweater, I'm only half joking. There's just something about this album... it's warm and comforting and, even if I go for a couple months without listening to it, I always come back to it and feel nostalgic. Maybe it's because I went through an obsessive phase- mostly while I was traveling in Spain a few years ago- where I liste... MORE
