Here Warren talks about mortality, song noir, and the King of Rock and Roll....and a YouTube of "Renegade".
Warren Zevon passed way from mesothelioma, a form of asbestos related lung cancer in 2003. A few months later, his son, Jordan, drove out to one of his dad's storage spaces in the San Fernando Valley to begin the sorting the process. He discovered over a 100 unreleased outtakes and demos in a piano-sized touring case.
Preludes features 16 of the best of these discovered recordings, including 6 unreleased tracks "Empty Hearted Town," "Going All The Way," "Steady Rain," ... MORE
This song was recorded during a live acoustic set with Jackson Browne in 1976. Though made famous by Linda Ronstadt's cover, something about Warren's vocal really touches me. Perhaps because you sense he is tapping into the emotional well from whence the song sprung.
Warren had a little funk groove goin' on here...." Never in a rut, always in the groove!" Happy Funky Friday, y'all!.
In the past seven days, I've had to deal with losing 1/3 of my main band (Haiku Rd.) and getting kicked out of the other band I'd been helping to form as a side-project and as a solution to my need for a Celtic music fix.
I suppose I'm lucky; I've never had either one happen before. But to get smacked with both in one week? Kinda sucks. (pout)
Warren Zevon , one of the "distant fallen angels that descended much too soon. His live shows were always a trip, although there were times when his substance abuse messed things up. I saw him a few times at Lupo's in Providence RI and he was entertaining, enervating, caustically insightful and funny. A vicious wit and a droll delivery , coupled with his great songs and inspired covers, always made for a great time.
Having just finished the Zevon book (_I'll Sleep When I'm Dead_), I came to the conclusion that I had missed out on a lot by not paying attention to Warren Zevon's career. In high school, I sort of considered him a novelty act, what with the "Werewolves of London" and "Excitable Boy" and all. In college, "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" became the theme song for road trips in my friend's VW Golf (as I mogged about some time ago), but I was never really clued into wh... MORE
1. Kanye West, "Through the Wire." Kanye was a well-respected producer before "Through the Wire." He struggled to get accepted as a rapper ... his image was thought to be too clean-cut. Then he was in a near-fatal car crash, which resulted in his jaw being wired shut. Two weeks later, he went into the studio and cut this track, with his jaw still wired up. He got to make a solo album after that. 2. R. Kelly, "Ignition (Remix)." What are we to make of R. Kelly? His albums ... MORE
Perfect for Halloween...the only top 40 hit the late Warren Zevon ever registered. "I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's...and his hair was perfect". HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
