A cloud of dust and the hearty cry: "Sancho! My armor!" (Sancho? Armor!?) Oops, wrong heroes. For Funky Friday, here's Duncan Reynaldo and Leo Carillo, The Cisco Kid and Pancho. A Google! search revealed that the movie "Cisco Kid" was played by Cesar Romero as a debonair sort. Cisco was a peripheral O. Henry character, who would have been unsavory for the 1950's TV audience. There was more about Old New Mexico, but here are the Hispanic heroes of 1950's TV.... MORE

A Google! search and a look at a Wikipedia article suggests that I have some Funk on Ye Olde Pismo after all. What is a "Funky city"? The above picture answers that question. So here's 3:29 of War. May The Funk be with your city!

This track has always been a favorite of mine, even if it's a six minute tune. This Ghetto Man does things for his people, making the best of things. Now that's one cool cat!

With the resignation today of the most brilliant political stratagists of our generation, there are some on the left who are no doubt popping champagne and whoopping it up. They've been after his scalp for years out of fear they'll have to face his stratagies again in the future. But Rove & Co are too smart to be brought down by bogus investigations of non-crimes and purely political manuevers.
But before anyone gets too tipsy with joy, one would do well to consider...wh... MORE

War's little polemic on stereotypes seems particularly germaine these days.
Race relations in America is still a touchy issue. Sad to say, but there are millions of people who would not vote for this man for no other reason than the color of his skin.... MORE

I think we've turned the corner. Today was the first official day of shorts wearing in Brooklyn. There were outfreakages of 80 degree weather last month, but today felt like the real thing. I started thinking about music that fits the summer groove and War came to mind.
War was a Big/Black/Latino Band, that was comfortable in a funk bag, a jazz bag, a rock bag, or any other bag you might name. The wiki entry does a pretty good job of breaking the history down, but it lacks a... MORE

One of the many benefits of growing up in the 70's in Southern Cali, was that I got acquainted with some really good music from an early age. My appreciation of music today is colored with the sounds of my childhood and this cut was one of the many that sends me back to an earlier day.... MORE

...ever go through a book so fast when you first read it that later, you find yourself re-reading it and finding shite you'd gleaned over or outright forgot you'd read? I'm re-reading Vivien Goldman's The Book of Exodus…the Making and Meaning of Bob Marley's Album of the Century and am reminded of a thought I'd had years ago, back in my tiny apartment in New York City when I tangentially made the connection between the music of the funk/rock band War and the original Wailer... For those who have stumbled across my first two posts, excuse me for going on and on, getting too serious, etc. I found this site via a Google! search for "music networking" sites. It looks like an freewheeling place, so I'll stay off the soapbox in the future. Truth to tell, I'm a Last.FM and MyStrands denizen, and both sites were off line. So, I went in search of places like those, that weren't Windows-only like Rhapsody. (I am a dual system user, but the Mac portables are ... MORE

I just played this this evening.
Side 2 is just so strong. Second track is the title track, and if you don't know the tune, you have been hiding in a cupboard for too long.
The final track is Beetles in the Bog. Again loving this... But it is the first track that I have discovered again tonight. Four Cornered Room is just perfect. Think another spin is in order... Oh and I truly love the cover. It feels like you want to know more about this neighbourhood...so... MORE

OK so what is up with all the angst and edginess going on around here lately? OK so wow we have growing pains here at good old Mog. OK so what's up with crucial moggers just up and abandoinig ship? OK so what's with all the bullshit non music posts and pictures of your tiny overpriced apartment and what the fuck you ate for breakfast? Umm, it's called progression.
Yes, Mog is changing, and expanding, and exploding, even, much like Lester's waistline. Yes, we are going ... MORE
