First as a backing band for Eric Burdon, and then on its own, multi-cultural band War played true "world music" years before the term was coined. The group pioneered a blend of soul, R&B, funk, Latin, jazz and African music, and even managed to have several hit singles along the way. Harmonica player Lee Oskar recorded several notable solo albums as well.

A cloud of dust and the hearty cry: "Sancho! My armor!" (Sancho? Armor!?) Oops, wrong heroes. For Funky Friday, here's Duncan Reynaldo and Leo Carillo, The Cisco Kid and Pancho. A Google! search revealed that the movie "Cisco Kid" was played by Cesar Romero as a debonair sort. Cisco was a peripheral O. Henry character, who would have been unsavory for the 1950's TV audience. A Google! search and a look at a Wikipedia article suggests that I have some Funk on Ye Olde Pismo after all. What is a "Funky city"? The above picture answers that question. So here's 3:29 of War. May The Funk be with your city!

I think we've turned the corner. Today was the first official day of shorts wearing in Brooklyn. There were outfreakages of 80 degree weather last month, but today felt like the real thing. I started thinking about music that fits the summer groove and War came to mind.

One of the many benefits of growing up in the 70's in Southern Cali, was that I got acquainted with some really good music from an early age. My appreciation of music today is colored with the sounds of my childhood and this cut was one of the many that sends me back to an earlier day.... MORE

For those who have stumbled across my first two posts, excuse me for going on and on, getting too serious, etc. I found this site via a Google! search for "music networking" sites. I just played this this evening.
Side 2 is just so strong. Second track is the title track, and if you don't know the tune, you have been hiding in a cupboard for too long.
The final track is Beetles in the Bog. Again loving this... But it is the first track that I have discovered again tonight. Four Cornered Room is just perfect. Think another spin is in order... Oh and I truly love the cover. It feels like you want to know more about this neighbourhood...so... MORE
