With all the latter-day love (and acknowledgement of influence) lavished on English dream-folk singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan by the likes of Joanna Newsom and Devendra Barnhart, how did she bypass my attention for so long?Maybe it’s the miniscule output: A few low-impact U.K. singles from the late ‘60s; one now-lionized but then-commercially ignored 1970 album (Just Another Diamond Day, prod
As you'll recall, Vashti Bunyan was being groomed for pop stardom when she took off for Donovan's commune in the late 1960s. She had, in fact, recorded a single with Andrew Loog Oldham before becoming disenchanted with the whole process and returning to the land. The pristine, lovely result of her turning away was, of course, Just Another Diamond Day...lately rescued from obscurity by the tir...

'Vashti Bunyan: From Here To Before' is a feature documentary about influential UK singer songwriter Vashti Bunyan, directed by acclaimed UK filmmaker Kieran Evans (Finisterre). It received it's world premiere at The Times 52nd London International Film Festival at the BFI Southbank. For [...]
I found this reduced in Borders on Wednesday evening and couldn't resist it. I'd only heard the one track of hers previously, Winter Is Blue from the compilation Gather In The Mushrooms (The British Acid Folk Underground 1968-1974). Folk, I guess you have to call it that, isn't really my thing but I'm warming to (some of it) slowly. This album's fantastic anyway, I haven't stopped playing it yet.
Originally, I wasn't going to make the trek up to Charlottesville to see Vashti Bunyan, but a friend in need reminded me that Ms. Bunyan might not be back again for a while so we made the drive up to Charlottesville from Richmond. The opener was Meredith Bragg - a songwriter from Central Virginia. Most of his set was just okay, but he did end with a very nice song in 3/4 time. I'm a sucker for...
