Day 1 of Coachella has been covered already, nicely by Dale, among others; I’m a tad late getting my pieces together and organized but here’s my spin on the first day of the festivities: Our crazy crew left Hollywood a bit sleep deprived, girls picking up boys around 10am and headed South toward Indio. Kate very nicely feigned feeling icky in the back seat so we could stop by an IN ‘N OUT burger, allowing her to get into the front seat and the tourists in our group to... MORE

Sometimes you need a record that’s rough around all the right edges. Sometimes you need an album with harpsichord solos. Thankfully, both can be found in Vampire Weekend’s eponymous debut. Leaping out of the blogosphere and into your local Target, Vampire Weekend formed at Columbia University in early 2006, released a much-discussed EP in 2007, and now this proper full-length in January. Chris Tomson, Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij and Chris Baio have already been tentat... MORE

It seems to be the in thing to rave about the new(ish) Vampire Weekend self titled album - and I guess it's time I joined the party. Being my first post here it's probably not a bad idea to set in stone that the Vampire Weekend album pretty much epitomizes everything that I love in music. Sure my music taste stretches far and wide (perhaps more so every time I get handed a CD from a friend) but this sort of indie-rock really stands out to me. The Vampire Weekend debut wr... MORE

It's been a bad two weeks for Vampire Weekend. The preppy indie rock band's UK tour has been cursed.
Just last week the hyped band had to cancel two UK concerts because keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij had been sidelined with a gastric infection. Batmanglij also missed last night's Shockwaves NME Awards in London.
The Awards show, however, spelled disaster for another Vampire Weekend member, drummer Chris Tomson. Tomson, who had been at an after party for the... MORE

Have you heard the new Vampire Weekend album? I happened to get a copy, and it's catchy as hell. On the one hand, they sound pretty flawlessly African, but on the other hand, their lyrics, full of references to sites around the Northeast, make it pretty clear that they're not from Africa. "Walcott," probably the most infectious song on an album full of infectious songs and my early pick for song of the year, refers to passing the Mystic Seaport after leaving Cape Cod, a tr... MORE

It's been a little while since the last sampler... oh well, it's here now. A trio of perfect little pop confections - 1) Vampire Weekend's steel drum enfused Walcott (next 2 in the comment section)
2)Hot Chip's Hold On drips and drops until it builds to a wicked stalagmite point 3)Helio Sequence's airy Keep Your Eyes Ahead... MORE

Best Buy has the best deals this week, so these are from there. As usual, I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just trying to give people a cheap way to support good artists: CDs for $7.99: Vampire Weekend; Metro Station; Sara Bareilles; Kate Nash; Matt Costa; Battles (never heard of these guys before, but a quick check on iTunes sounds pretty cool); We The Kings; Five Finger Death Punch; Egypt Central DVDs for $4.99 (gangster theme): Godfather I & II; Casin... OK, I am, or try to be resistent to hype - but in this case, these guys deserve it.
I saw the video a while back. Thought it was one of the better crop.
The album, though, is great. Just really, really strong - in the same way that Amy Winehouse's Back to Black was two years ago.
Most highly recommended for anyone who likes Yo La Tengo, the Lefte Bank, the Specials. The influences are kind of diverse...... MORE

Missed them in Pontiac in December when I saw they would be back in Michigan I immediately got tickets. They are going to be at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor tonight and I have three tickets. We have a snow advisory until 10pm. It is been snowing steadily for the past several hours and the weather channel says the snow will lead to hazardous driving conditions.
From the national weather service:
MODERATE TO HEAVY SHOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE EVENING COMMUTE

From the Blogotheque Series - Vampire Weekend - A band from New York who describes their sound as "Upper West Side Soweto" and siting being influenced by both African popular music and Western Classical Music. I've been hearing lots and lots of good things on these guys and I've finally had a chance to check them out and I've gotta say I'm pretty impressed and really do enjoy what I hear, I'm holding back the temptation to go out and grab their album right now! Mans... MORE

I usually run away from hype like a scared little girl from a pervy old man. But, I, thankfully didn't hear all the hype on Vampire Weekend until I got the album in my hands. All I have to say is believe the hype. These guys are so good it makes my ears bleed.
Thing is they're not deep, or prog, or challenging, or any of that. It's just straight ahead pop music made by a bunch of kooky NY boys. Love it. Just love it.
Maybe it's the water soaking into my brain, but w... MORE

I’ve a special place in my black heart for popular artists working in much-derided genres who nonetheless do great work. Work on par, or (shock! horror!) better, than that from mediums or genres that most people automatically assume to be high art – like theatre, ballet, or dubstep. The world of pop is a much-derided genre. It’s seen as frivolous, fey and, indeed, gay. Of course, if anybody said so to my face, I wouldn’t hesitate to beat on their chest while crying, “Y... MORE
