Last month, DLuebbert posted this item containing a video of a performance by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. In the comment thread, he gave a wonderful introduction to the basic ideas in Qawwali music. If you haven't seen it already, check it out now. It will help you understand the rest of this post. One of the issues that arose in that discussion was the "alap," or opening, portion of a qawwali tune, in particular the arhythmic, improvisational nature of the the alap tends ... MORE

Various sturdy sources claim this to be the oldest recording of music in existence. In 1888 some clever folk in Ameriky recorded this simple acoustic performance using Edison's patented phonograph and a Berliner cylinder. As i remember the episode, the victim was a young woman - a club singer - who allegedly committed suicide, but was in fact murdered. But what stuck in my mind her signature song - which i just found out was by Quincy Jones and Alan & Marilyn Bergman - a sad-chantoozy-type number called Even when You Cry. (Periodically i do googles for a n... MORE

I spent some time at the beach yesterday. I love the Sea-salt smell, the breezes, the timeless mantra the waves chant. And the Thongs.
It made me think of astronomy.

I have been looking for YEARS to find the first song on this trailer for the movie "Thirteen".
Anyone who can tell me what it is will be my new hero for life. Or maybe just for today...
But still, anyone know? It's the song that plays under the first 32 seconds.... MORE
