All Music GuideThe Essence of Tony Bennett is a ten-track, budget-priced collection that culls highlights -- not necessarily hits -- from Bennett's long career at Columbia Records. There are several classic moments here ("When Joanna Loved Me," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "All My Tomorrows," "Because of You," "Solitaire," "Something in Your Smile"), but the selection is too haphazard to make the collection a good introduction. Nevertheless, it's not bad as a sampler, since the music itself is very, very good.
