Tony Allen - King Of Drummers

Artist:
Other Tags: afrobeat
The buzz has it that Tony Allen is the world's best drummer because he can play a different rhythm with each limb. So when the BBC's 'The Culture Show' interviewed him last night, the first thing Lauren Laverne asked him was to demonstrate. Instantly he started a grooving Afrobeat with each hand and foot playing a different time. The best part was that it sounded smooth and easy. Allen was one of the founding members of Fela Kuti's band in Lagos, Nigeria in the early 70s.... MORE

Blog post image preview Fela Kuti is a household name for music lovers around the world, and so are his son Femi, and his drummer Tony Allen. I dare say, however, that their country, Nigeria, is quite the _terra incognita_ even to the well-traveled friend of world music. It is in theory one of the richest countries in sub-saharan Africa (loads of oil), also the most populous; but such is the state of that state that its visitors are for the most part only those who have to go: petroleum persons, ... Blog post image preview Many words have been written about Fela on MOG and in the real world, and for a real good reason. Folks feel his music, empathize with his struggle, and champion his icon status. The majority of his records have been re-issued, he's been celebrated with tribute albums and US musicians are forming Afro-Beat ensembles. His talented son also carries on the afro-beat legacy and is hugely popular with groove fans here and a star across the pond. Fela is gone, but he will surely... MORE

Sexy as hell

(57)
Blog post image preview Track Themes: "Afro Disco Beat" by Tony Allen In the Last King of Scotland, charasmatic young Scots actor James McAvoy plays the personal physician of mass-murdering Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. As if that wasn’t dangerous enough, McAvoy’s character incurs the wrath of Amin by playing doctor and nurses with the wrong woman. While he dances with the devil, the soundtrack pumps out the sexy as hell, Afro Disco Beat. Unlike its Western incarnation, African disco doesn’t... MORE

Bassline announcing its arrival, percussive tone arranging the mystery, Horn heightening its spirituality and the organ warming the set-apart atmosphere. This offbeat trance, has become a shrine that we hope to hear hailed, and sound-resembling in city night shift clubs and underground dance scenes....! Minor keys calling us into the dimension of a jazz-like... as staccato drum-set frames the architechture of this musical monastery. Tony Allen, with his four limbs, defin... MORE

adding up the numbers, i found out last month i spent almost one third of my pay on music and books (my paycheck isn't that big, but still... it hurts! it hurts!). music shouldn't be expensive ... i'd like to know how the money i pay for a cd/mp3 is distributed amongst the artists, the store, the record company, the manager, all that shit. (obviously "justified" by the scale of added value -- ha!). anyways, i just got a couple of albums -- still haven't listened to them... MORE
