AMG Review of The Complete Tommy Dorsey, Vol. 2 (1936)
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThe second of eight two-fer LPs that trace complete and in chronological order all of Dorsey's recordings from 1935 up to March 1939, this set (like the others) includes gems and duds. During 1936 his band was popular enough to keep going but had not broken through to the bigtime yet. With trumpeter Max Kaminsky, clarinetist Joe Dixon and the great tenor Bud Freeman contributing solos and Edythe Wright and the commercial singer Jack Leonard heard on vocals, the music ranges from pop schlock to some big-band swing (such as "Royal Garden Blues," "That's a Plenty" and "After You've Gone") and two songs by Dorsey's Clambake Seven.
