This is a gorgeous song, from a gorgeous album by the estimable Mr. Tom Waits, from his early years, when he used to sing. Quite charming.
Like Dylan, Tom Waits' gravelly voice is an acquired taste. I have become a full-blown addict, though. I think he is extraordinarily talented - his lyrics are so improvisational, yet poetic; he snaps his fingers (hey, what can I say? I dig finger-snapping);he smokes like a factory, and he is almost better at being a drunk than Dean Martin. It just made my night to find this 1975 video footage of Eggs & Sausage/Semi Suite. Just sitting out in my backyard tonight with my wife and a bottle of New Zealand Pinot Noir - It's a bit chilly, but that's left us with these crystal clear nights...There is very little light pollution on the South side of the Island, so the stars are amazing...Tom Waits is on the Stereo and, you know, some things just come together and are meant to be...
