i was a poor 20 year old, working three part time jobs and going to school full time for recording engineering (recording bands in the studio/running live sound). one night my job working as a 'night guy' (i think that was actually my official title) at paisley park studios, prince decided to throw one of his famous middle of the night concerts. after coordinating the band, security, engineers and crew, i got a call from someone who claimed to be in pete droge's band. h... I have gotten on a Tom Petty kick lately. There is jut something brilliant in the seeming simplicity of his songs that I'll probably post more about at a later date. Put this one in the CD player on my way home and made me think of that time in a trip when your in the driving zone and it's almost unreal to be just flying over the land, covering so much ground. He probably wont get this for a while, but for the rest of you, may it remind you of good times traveling.
I think in song lyrics. Really I do. I can't tell you how many times a day that something happens to me, or I see something and a song lyric is instantly pulled from the musical filing cabinet that is mind. It happens so often I don't even think about it anymore. Well, one of the coolest things about moving from the Midwest to Los Angeles has been being able to put visuals with so many of the songs that I have stored in my music obsessed mind. This one is a perfect exa... MORE
I felt like sharing the lyrics to this song after listening Tom Petty's version of it the other day. Hope that some will enjoy. "Don't Bring Me Down" When you complain, and criticizeI feel I'm nothing in your eyesIt makes me feel like giving upBecause my best just ain't good enough Girl I want to provide for youAnd do all the things you want me to Oh, oh no, don't bring me downI'm begin' you darlin'Oh, oh no, don't bring me down Sacrifices how we makeI'm ready to... I never would have thought that I would want to read a 300+ page book about Tom Petty...Conversations With Tom Petty is really something else, though. It reminded me how much great music Petty has made - with the Heartbreakers, the Wilburys and as a solo artist. He's really easy to take for granted but dig out Wildflowers , She's The One or The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1 and just listen. Forget the fact that he knew and played with everyone: Duck Dunn, Jim Keltner, ... MORE
Back when MTV actually played videos pretty much 24/7, there were funny ones, straightforward concert lips, dramatic ones and surreal ones.
And some that were downright creepy.
Here's my nominee for "Creepiest Video of the Week"
(I heard at the time it came out that the final shot had to be cut short because some of the band membes and cast began getting a little carried away about what they could do with the cake...)
I'm psyched for the Tom Petty concert here Thursday night. I live in Petty's hometown and this is the first time he's played Gainesville in 13 years and I have insanely kickass seats for the show (which sold out like nobody's business). Today I read this article in the local newspaper. WOOHOO!! Wouldn't it rock if Bob Dylan also showed up?? It's not that far-fetched. Bob and Tom are the two surviving members of the Traveling Wilburys (R.I.P. Roy Orbison & George Harriso... MORE
